This same issue is reported on multiple Honda models as far back as 2002 Civics. On Elements it is reported on the 2004 model, although I did not see a reference to the fix. Honda has a service bulletin on the stiff shifting and popping gear, but it references changing to a new Honda transmission fluid, with I also did for an additional $275. Total cost to get to the bottom of the problem was $700.
This is a very dangerous problem as the transmission will typically shift out of gear at low speed, such as when making a left turn in front of a semi truck (which happened to me). I inspected the cable and the transmission-end cable bushing, made of metal and rubber, which was badly corroded and broken into multiple pieces. Corrosion seems to be a continuous problem on the Element . Add transmission to brake failures due to corrosion.
