I was driving slowly- between 10-15 mph- on a gravelly road. Without any issue my driver's side airbag deployed, impacting me but luckily I kept things under control and brought the car to a stop. Brought car to dealer and they said it was no longer under warranty and would be $2500 to repair. They couldn't explain why it went off other than "the sensor told the airbag to deploy". I went round and round with Honda USA, honestly shocked that they didn't consider this a safety malfunction that could have caused a major accident. In the end they couldn't explain and had no interest in trying to dig into it. They determined that "a piece of gravel must have hit the sensor". Eventually I gave up and paid the dealer (minus a 10% discount they gave me). Now, whenever I drive I'm always paranoid that a random piece of road debris might deploy an airbag whenever.
I am reporting this now as I just had another airbag issue fixed under recall. I wonder when this issue will become a recall...
