Clarity Plug-In Hybrid 1.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 18,075 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

I got this car Jan 2020. Before my first maintenance oil change, I already experienced the car struggling to go uphill numerous times. Even going up a little hill like Appian in Pinole toward the freeway, I will go to gradually accelerate but it will rev up really high but will not accelerate! At my first service visit I told them about this and also the mileage gauge is off, meaning I am getting way less miles per gallon than advertised. They waived it off and said they checked everything and that nothing is wrong. I previously had the Honda Accord Plug In Hybrid so I know exactly how the car runs. With the Accord, even without charging it, I got 45 miles per gallon. The Clarity I barely get low 30s miles per gallon. I understand the dyno test etc but it should at least get high 30s/low 40s miles per gallon.

They blamed it on traffic. Well with the pandemic, there has been no traffic for 3 months and I've been driving it and still observing and same problems. Extremely low miles per gallon and the struggling uphill and troubles accelerating are still occurring. Therefore on my recent service visit on June 11th, I again voiced my dissatisfaction with this issues. Advisor promised he's getting the most experienced tech to work and check out the car. Of course - no issues found, could not replicate. (I couldn't get in car with them because of covid19).

They wrote: Test drove the vehicle and found no issues with the vehicle. With the Vehicle being a hybrid the engine will kick on to assist the electric motor if a heavy load is detected. The Engine will Rev up as the speed or load increases....This is Normal.

Well, duh - I know that, but it is Revving up very high and unnecessarily getting stuck at one speed and won't accelerate, even on a gradual small hill.

It is very similar to some of the other complaints I've read on this. I wish I had read the other complaints before getting the car. I don't know what to do to get this fixed now since Honda of Concord keeps saying nothing is wrong when obviously there is if other people experiencing same thing.

Clarity Plug-In Hybrid Touring 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 1,000 miles

Brought car back 4 times, opened complaint with Honda who is playing the game that "nothing is wrong". About 6 or 7 people have the same SAFETY issue, but dealerships cannot find the problem and Honda makes no effort to find the problem because they are so sure of themselves that either they believe that nothing is wrong or they are really good at playing games. Most likely the ladder because I went to arbitration (multiple times engines did this and I also have 10 other electronic issues) and was refused reimbursement. Now I am stuck with the same vehicle that is full of issues and I feel that nobody cares. Honda was supposed to send a specialist but customer service cancelled the appointment because they could not justify it. Word for word that is exactly what they said. This car should be recalled immediately before someone gets killed. Thanks

Update from Dec 23, 2018: Also, when the car is fully charge (or if I still have lots of charge left) and driving on EV, the engine kicks in by itself. The only way to turn it off is to pull over, park and turn the engine off. I do that almost every day between 3 and 14 times! Sent videos and photos to Honda and they still manage to ignore me. Shame on Honda!! After owning dozens of motorcycles and multiple Civics, I am so disappointed by the way they are treating me that I will never buy their product anymore.

Clarity Plug-In Hybrid Touring

  • CVT transmission
  • 1,000 miles

Like others on this site, my Clarity, out of the blue one day, revved so high while getting on the highway that I though the engine would blow up. I then lost all power while it was doing this. This is very dangerous and one of the many reasons why I decided to go to the dealer and explain all of the issues I was having and tell them that this Clarity is not the only one with these issues. Most of the complaints about the car on this site cannot be repaired the service department will just say "there is no software update for that" and noting can be done.

Fearful that this car was neither safe or reliable, I asked them to take this car back and let me purchase the next closest car Honda makes which is the Accord Hybrid. Due to negative equity I lost almost 8 thousand dollars on this deal. The dealer, Voss Honda in Tipp City, OH should have made things right by swallowing their pride and taking a loss and making sure that my loan was no more than it was for the Clarity.

The Accord actually had a lower MSRP than the Clairty! I purchased it in good faith having had a positive experience with Honda, but the dealer wanted me to pursue lemon law and I did not want to wait that long as I felt the car was unsafe. The dealer screwed me out of almost 8k because of the negative equity of the Clarity. They could have just made it right and lost a bit of money but no, they had to get their cash.

I will report the high engine revving in another complaint but if anyone reading this in the Dayton OH area, the dealer was Voss Honda in Tipp City. They brag about their "presidents award" but in reality do nothing to make a bad car sale right, they should have just let me purchase the Accord and keep the loan amount the same, now I have a payment I cannot afford. Email to the CEO of Voss Auto Group went unanswered. I would like to be notified if there is a class action lawsuit for Clarity owners. I also will contact the media and have already reported them to BBB, and will file suit directly if this is not resolved. The dealer owes me $7800!
