2017 Honda Civic hatchback LX manual.

Bought it certified used at 30,000kms from a Honda dealership, transmission failed at 80,000kms. Brought it back to the same dealership and after 3 weeks and $1,100 of my own money to inspect the car, they want $10,000 to fix it.

According to the dealership, the transmission's 3rd and 4th gear failed, and the flywheel appeared to be overheated. They cited driver misuse. To be clear, I use the car to commute 25 km back and forth to work and often sit in traffic. Not sure what kind of transmission they're designing if it fails at 80,000kms.

I had thought, no problem, this should be covered under Honda's "Five Year Non Nonsense Warranty" after 3 weeks this is the second email I received after an introductory email from Honda Customer Relations:

"Thank you for your email. The reference you can use for this case# -------. The part failure that occurred to this vehicle was not due to a manufacturers defect and as such would not be able to be claimed under warranty nor would it be eligible for goodwill assistance as that is only considered for failures that are defects. I do not have any internal documentation that can be offered to you, however, the dealership will be detailing the cause of failure on your invoice so that you will have Honda Canada's position in writing."

There's so much that makes me angry about this email but mainly, the fact that they're able to prove its not a manufacturing defect without providing any internal documentation between the dealership and themselves is beyond frustrating.

The car is a lemon and Honda is simply throwing up their hands and saying, too bad, here's the invoice for our time, good luck. The whole point of a warranty is the peace of mind that any issues short of an accident are covered.

I've had an '01 and '07 civic (both manual) that I sold at 260,000 km that still worked and they're accusing me of misusing their products. I assumed that my '17 would be built to a similar standard, I was wrong.

I've heard talk of Honda quality slipping, this is a perfect example of that. I'm not asking for much, just asking for them to stand behind their warranty. Why advertise a warranty if you're just going to blame drivers when parts fail?
