I've had this issue for many thousands of miles, but it was never that bad. Within the last year, or maybe 5000 miles, it is beyond annoying while driving on the highway. I'm at roughly 104000 miles now. Steering wheel sticks when turning slightly either direction (car drifts so you have to turn the wheel to correct) and causes you to over correct, so it looks like I'm driving drunk or something.
After doing lots of research on it, I've found that many people seem to have had this issue with this, and other year models as well. There definitely SHOULD be a recall, but there isn't. The dealership is the only one, to my knowledge, that can reprogram whatever needs to be reprogrammed when replacing the steering rack, so I have to at least have them do that, but luckily for me, we own a mechanic shop. Even with us doing the work ourselves, it will cost us $2063.92 for the part, and $199.95 for Honda to reprogram it. I could get a used rack for $175 off of one with less miles than mine, but do I want to risk the issue happening again? No. If I just let the dealership do it, they wanted almost $3900 plus tax, not including the alignment. I am very disappointed in Honda. I bought this car with the belief that I would have it for a very long time, and not have to do any major repairs, especially just after 100K miles.
Steering is sticking close to the neutral position. You have to overcome the tight spot to compensate for the drift in steering. This is especially dangerous at interstate speeds. I have read where the problem is a loose magnet in the electromechanical steering unit. Honda should recall these units and replace them since it is a safety hazard.
After the car warms up about 30 miles on straight freeway driving, the steering sticks while trying to make small corrections as with any car while driving straight.
When there is a slight turn on the freeway it sticks and causes it to overcompensate. While sitting at a stop light it will just suddenly make a slight jerk.
Took to the dealer while under warranty at 27,000 miles they said is needed a front end alignment that seemed to fix he problem until recently at 47 k it has started again, now out of warranty sure I'm stuck with the cost to replace the steering system.
My first Honda and likely my last... Incidentally I have a 2006 Jetta TDI Limited with 303075 miles with electric steering and is still drives the way it did the day I bought it.
