12/28/2021 My car alarm started going off and when I went out to my vehicle to turn off the alarm, my car was all locked up and I had to manually unlock my car with my key (it normally functions keyless). My whole computer system was on and would not turn off. My dashboard was flashing warning issues with my alarm system, antitheft system, hill assist problem, power steering issue, keyless start system problem, and more. My car would not let me turn it off or fully on to drive it. When I tried to push the engine off, you can hear it click back on and see the dashboard light up once again. When I tried to power the car fully on, the engine did not have enough power to start. This happened for about 10mins then I was finally able to drive it to my closest Honda dealership because it still would not turn off and I was at work at the time.

I brought it to Curry Honda in Chamblee, GA and no one there had ever seen this problem before. The service manager has worked with Honda for decades and never seen a car start up on its own and then unable to turn off. He did a diagnostic test to my car and discovered it was a faulty part 38809-TBC-A31 or body control module. Curry Honda wanted $541.44 upfront for the part, but all they could do was order it and wait for the part to be off back order. I was told the part is no longer being made at the moment. I paid the $541.44 at first and later cancelled it for a refund because I needed the money to pursue other ways around the back order issue. The part is still on back order today 11/03/2022.

When my body control module is giving me issues, it will not fully turn off until the battery loses power and dies. I then have to jump my car and hope that works. Sometimes I cannot jump my car using a self starter or another car trying to jump start mine. This is more that an inconvenience for me because this affects my life every day. Every time I use my car I'm not sure if it will start or turn off. My 2017 Honda Civic EX is a lemon. I bought this car for a cheap reliable ride I can depend on for low maintenance, but it cost me regular maintenance + monthly loan payments + unexpected costs trying to fix a faulty part. It has slowly drained away my savings. I am a young woman and this also puts my safety at risk because I cannot quickly start my car if I am ever in a dangerous situation. I cannot lock my car when I am not using it because that will cause the alarm to go off and drain my battery. This is vehicle is a liability to me.

We actually started having issues about 2 or 3 years ago, but Honda dismissed it. Of course, now that it's out of warranty they tell us it's the body control unit and it'll be $600 to fix except the part is on backorder. It'll be 2-6 weeks and the guy at the dealership says it could happen again. WTF? I don't even replace my phone every year even though it's an integral part of my job because it costs to much. Paying $600 possibly every year for something that should last decades is absolutely ridiculous. Honda should replace this for free considering the number of people I have seen have this issue (and that's just from a 5 minute search).
