Transmission first began to shudder shifting from second to third gear (automatic transmission) - but only on slow acceleration such as in stop and go heavy traffic (most of my commute) If I accelerate medium to hard it is normal. It has slowly been getting worse even though I have to manually shift it to avoid the issue in stop and go driving, or accelerate medium when in normal driving. I think it stated around 65K miles - I have 105K now. Barely noticeable at first - very bad now. Just past warranty so out of luck. My shop says never heard of a Civic doing this. Lemon...

Civic EX

  • Automatic transmission
  • 80,000 miles

I first thought I noticed something around 60,000 miles, and it has slowly become worse. The car now has 90,000 miles on it. The whole car shudders when shifting into 3rd gear (auto trans) but only under slow acceleration or when slowly going up a hill (I live on a hill). I also drive over a long hill in my daily commute in heavy traffic when this speed is typical for stop and go commuting, so I notice it every day. Under moderate or hard acceleration it is fine.

This shift happens about 17 MPH under low acceleration. It shifts normally under moderate acceleration which shifts into 3rd about 22 MPH or higher. I have had to now use manual shifting so that I don't let it shift into 3rd until I am over 22 MPH.

Fluid is checked regularly and is not low. I asked my shop if they have ever heard of this, and checked service bulletins etc. and Civic transmissions are considered pretty bullet proof. No one else seems to have had this problem. I am in my 60's and don't beat on the car - it is a daily 30 mile each way commute car.

Anyone else ever hear of this happening??
