After just two years of owning this car & having bought it brand new in 2009, the clear coat on the entire body of the vehicle began to crack. This led to discoloration of the paint as well. Luckily, Honda was able to take photos, submit them to their corporate offices and got my entire car repainted at no cost to me. Going through all this hassle and being without a car, without receiving a loaner - it was still annoying, seeing as how this car was only 2 years old!

paint oxidation and cracks in paint paint oxidation and cracks in paint

Last year, I had my vehicle hood and doors repainted due to the recall on the paint. In the fall of 2017 I began to notice my roof paint coming off at the back near the rear window. I reported this to Honda Canada and asked about the recall for this issue. I did so because every Honda I see on the road similar to mine has the same paint issue. (See photos). I understand rust points and so on but this is most certainly a paint recal that Honda Canada refuses to assist me with and I need some assistance with this. My car is kept in the garage and not exposed to excessive elements. It is also low mileage for its age and I take care of it.

My beef is the roof paint coming off and my need to have this fixed as part of the paint recall where the hood of my car paint was cracking and shattered looking. This issue was also present on my doors and bumpers and it was fixed. Honda Canada refuses to fix the paint issue on my roof! I have been a honda owner of various models, Prelude, Accord X2 and now a Civic. If this is not fixed, my next car will certainly not be a Honda and I told Honda Canada this as well and they brushed me off without concern for a long time customer.

The roof of my black 2009 Honda Civic Si was repainted under your extended warranty for the paintwork recall. At that time the hood had not developed any paintwork problems. Pretty much as soon as the 7 year extended warranty on the paintwork expired, the paint on the hood began to deteriorate rapidly. A few months after the 7 year warranty expiration I took it to the same dealer who repainted the roof, but he told me (without checking) that there was nothing Honda would do because the warranty has expired. I accepted that at the time, but now the paintwork is so bad, not just on the hood, that I will never be able to sell the car without having it repainted. I have had 4 Hondas in the past 20 years, and they have all been great cars. This is the first major problem I have had with any of them, and if I have to pay to repaint this myself so I can sell it, I don't think I will be buying another.

Beautiful automobile. Never had a mechanical problem with it. Serviced at the regular intervals by Honda dealership (Bolton Honda)

It is very bad looking and a Prelude has to how it will become with age. Trying to get it fixed prior to another winter.

Paint problem with this year 2009 Honda Civic appears to be national problem as evidenced by all the complaints I've read. Defective and poor quality paint and primer used is the general consensus, along with clear coat peeling, and paint clouding and fading in patches. Even the quality of paint on door posts is chipping, fading and chalky in all areas. Had a 2005 Honda Accord and NEVER had these issues. On 2009 Civic issues are on roof, trunk, left bottom door panel, all door posts - cheap quality on all and needs to be recalled before it gets worse!

I have had to have my car painted in areas 3 different times. The paint does not match and I drive around with a bad paint job. I have tried to sell it multiple times and no one is interested in buying my car because they feel it has been in an accident or something due to the bad mismatched paint job. I have asked Honda to please repaint the whole car and they won't. They feel the are doing me a favor by painting the sections that have failed. It is a black car and looks horrible. Now new sections are starting so this will be the 4th time. They should paint the cars over that are doing this. Common sense tells me that the whole car will fail eventually. This is frustrating. I plan to file a lawsuit so please let me know if anyone else would like to join. This is all so frustrating.

Clear coat was fading, cracking, and in the worst spots coming off over entire care with exception to the trunk, bumpers, and doors. Honda was great and repainted all of the problem panels better than a factory paint job under the extended warranty they put out. I am really impressed with how well they back their product up. My car had BLACK paint. If you wish to inspect a car, the first place the paint starts to fail it seems is on tight creases in the body panels where they are exposed to direct sunlight. For example the rear fenders first started to fail on top at the 90 degree turn where they are bent into the trunk. The worst areas were the roof and that panel just above the doors.

The paint on my car started peeling off in the hood area fairly early on after purchase. From what I read, there was a paint warranty extension for Dark Blue 2003-2005 Odyssey's back in May of 2008. I believe that this warranty should be extended to Honda Civic 2009 vehicles as well, as the discoloration and peeling paint is not normal wear-and-tear/oxidation.

I received a warranty extension notice regarding the paint on my car. I took it to Honda yesterday and was told that it is covered, but I'd need to leave my car with them for 10-14 BUSINESS days, and they are not responsible for providing me with a loaner car..... What?

"If you read your warranty manual, it states that when warranty work is performed, they are not responsible for any loss you, the owner, may incur."

How convenient for Honda..... I wonder how many owners have opted to leave their cars for 2 and a half weeks and shell out $400+ for a rental? I'm guessing few, leaving Honda more available to perform work for PAYING customers.

I've got a message in at American Honda Motor Co., but am quite sure I know their answer.

I just got this car home from a Honda dealer and believed I had a good deal. It would last and maintain a good resale value as I am disabled and may need to sell it if my condition gets worse. I was told it was just as good as certified because it passed the same checklist certified Honda's go through and was told, " the only reason it's not certified is because they don't certify cars that are 3 years or older," by the salesman. I also found there were other points (at least 3) that could not have passed certification but since I live far from the dealer and needed to get a medical treatment, I couldn't negotiate any longer. The dealer did agree to respray the bumpers and touch up two scratches (that still have yet to be touched up) that were also damaged but I missed the damage to the paint on the roof and trunk. (Also, I think they resprayed the roof without applying clear coat too so it looked fine on the lot; but after I purchased it and drove in the rain, I noticed blue liquid coming off the towel I used to dry off my new car before I left it in my garage).

Now every time I wash my car or just look at my roof, I'm really displeased since I basically paid the price of a certified car but got a 2009 car that was just plain used but freshly detailed, ran well and had a car-fax that showed one owner and routine maintenance. The only thing that kept me from returning it was the fact that there was low mileage on the car and my disability and distance from the dealer kept me from starting that battle.

I called Honda America and found Honda issued a campaign to fix the paint and the certified checklist I asked my dealer what was available on-line, but I am happy to post this so less people might not have to go through this. This would have been fine if the 3 salespeople I dealt with could have been honest with me and sold me that car at a fair price but after looking up the price on Edmonds, I believe I overpaid by about two to three thousand dollars and Honda just did not use good paint.

My blue 2009 Honda Civic's paint started oxidizing this June. The car is barely four years old. It has white patches on the roof, rear side, and trunk. It started small and now is spreading rather quickly. I brought it to the Honda dealership, where the service manager admitted to a chipping problem on the front hood, and because of that,Honda would repaint the troubled areas. He said that the painting will be done out of "good will," however I would have to pay $300 of the repair. That's just infuriating, since I did nothing to cause this problem. In addition, Honda will only repaint the patchy areas, not the whole car. I fear that the panels of the car will all look different. Honda said that the painting will take two weeks and it declined to give me a rental car. I have bought four Hondas in the past seven years; after this, I will never buy a Honda again. The company should take responsibility for its paint issues and issue a recall on cars coated with bad paint. A class action suit should take place so that customers can get back the money that they have paid to fix this issue.

Went to the dealership and spoke to the service manager. He told me that if my car was black it would be a slam dunk for honda to take care of this. So I called Honda to get this going. Honda said because it's out of warranty they won't fix the paint. I then told her that my family had purchased a total of 5 Hondas in the past. She then changed her tune and mentioned product loyalty. Then they would evaluate the issue. Don't think that is right. Clearly the paint is an issue if others as well as the dealer has said it's a problem.

Honda is not high on my list right now. Waiting on the service manager to get back to me about what the rep is will to do to fix this.
