clear coat peeling clear coat peeling clear coat peeling clear coat peeling

When I first bought this car at David McDavid Honda of Irving (Texas) in 2012, I noticed there was paint or clear coat peeling on the roof of the car. I didn't immediately think much of it, thought maybe it was a one-off problem, and asked the dealership to repaint it before I picked it up-- they did. Being a full-time student and working full time, I didn't notice that the clear coat was starting to peel from the back of the car and then forward. When I did notice the clear coat I did not have the money to get it repainted and it was not a priority. When it got even worse, I started doing more research and found that there was actually a paint real for Hondas for several models across a range of years. Mine fell into that range. I went to David McDavid to ask them to repaint it and honor the warranty, but they refused since I was 3 months out of the warranty! What sucks is that I NEVER received anything in the mail letting me know there was an existing recall for that. And even worse, the dealership knew about the issue and refused to help. I contacted Honda of North America and they told me that the only way I could get the paint job was through my dealership. So now I am stuck and my car looks like crap. I still do not have over 1k for a paint job and neither my dealership or Honda is helping.

2009 Honda Civic LX Coupe___ Royal Blue Pearl _The paint is peeling and has gotten really noticeable in the last 3 months. Today is July 15, 2017 it started to be concerning last May. From looking at the internet many others have the same problem. It looks like there was a recall that has expired.

Really just a major annoyance driving a car that is in great shape but looks like a piece of garbage because of the cheap paint job by Honda. I was hoping to resell the car at some point when I am ready to get another but probably will receive significantly less because of this issue and I'm afraid to even bring it to Honda for a trade in since they will low ball the price even though this issue is on their end. I was told that I can bring my car to a Honda dealership and have the paint tested but I have found absolutely no evidence of that anywhere online.

I JUST FOUND OUT THAT THERE ARE LOTS OF PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. THE PAINT IN MY CAR IS FADING, THE RIM AROUND THE WINDOWS IS ALSO PEELING. I HAD GONE TO HONDA, FIRST TIME THREE YEARS AGO, AND THIS YEAR, LAST WEEK AND IS NOT ONLY THE PAINT THE ROOF OF MY CIVIC 2009 IS DENTED.

I DID NOT REALIZE THAT THERE WAS A WARRANTY OF 7 YEARS FOR CARS HAVING THIS PROBLEM. THE HONDA DEALER NEVER TOLD ME THAT!! HOW CAN IT BE POSSIBLE. SO I WANT YOU TO TELL ME HOW I GET HONDA TO RESPECT THAT WARRANTY.

I EVEN CALLED THE MAIN OFFICE HONDA COMPANY.

I took my 2009 Honda Civic to the Ernie Boch Jr. Honda dealership, located in Westford, MA at the end of July 2016 and again in the middle of August 2016 and mentioned to the technicians that I thought the area in which the clear coat paint was peeling was actually still under a recall/warranty. I received no response from the dealership, after several attempts to find out if my vehicle qualified for the recall. When I finally received a response after asking so many times, and after many phone calls, I was told I did not qualify for the recall. Months later, today (5/4/17) I am finallyyyyy learning that I DID qualify for the recall. However, I was told that this recall conveniently "expired" back in August 2016. Well, that is around the time when I asked about the recall IN THE FIRST PLACE! I am being told this repair averages about $2K in costs that I am now responsible to pay for, which is completely inexcusable. I LOVED Honda and the brand for many years prior to today, and now I am rethinking my car purchase entirely. Still trying to resolve the issue so that they will pay for this recall, but it is not looking good. I am so upset and disheartened with this news. :(

Update from May 15, 2018: 15May18: The dealership fixed the paint (in the summer of 2017), but ONLY on the back bumper and the roof. I was told that the recall did not cover the rest of the paint on the vehicle, which was defective last year (2017) and continues to look terrible this year (2018). Since it is now so far past the recall allotment dates, it appears we may only get a deductible to have the paint fixed. There is no excuse for this run-around, but here I still am.

I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THIS IS BEING CALLED "NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR" BY THE MANUFACTURER. I HAVE A 2002 FORD EXPLORER AND THE PAINT WORK CAN BE DESCRIBED AS "AS GOOD AS NEW". STRANGE THAT IT IS ONLY HONDA VEHICLES EXPERIENCING FLAKING OF THE CLEAR COAT AND NOT OTHER MANUFACTURERS. THIS IS DEFINITELY A PRODUCTION FAULT AND THEY ARE ABLE TO SIDESTEP IT BECAUSE IT IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE.

My car is in excellent condition, except for the paint. My uncle asked what happened to your car, it looks like it has skin cancer. The clear coat is peeling away particularly on the roof, as well as the hood and trunk. This makes the car look much older and junkier.

The problem has been around for about 2 years now on the peeling side. Prior I noticed the paint was getting very dull, similar to the comments here. Now the car looks like trash and Honda refuses to cover it claiming the same issues about "keeping out of sun", "avoiding bird poo", etc. It's rubbish. This needs to see a class action lawsuit.

I had my 2009 Honda Civic 6 months when my son placed a wrapped gift on the trunk of my car. When he took it off, there were all scratches!! How could a wrapped present scratch a car unless there was no clearcoat.

with the horrible paint job and the visors falling apart this is my first and last Honda. Plus, I never received any recall or problem notices at all. I only have 60,000 mi. on the car.

One Month after the extended warranty expired, I noticed the clear coat on the roof started to appear dull. Several months later the condition became more severe and the problem started to appear on the trunk lid, and hood. In May 2016, when my daughter brought the car home from college, I took the car to my Honda dealer and was told there was nothing they could do, that the extended warranty had expired. They gave me an estimate of $1,529 to repaint the hood, roof, and trunk lid. By August the top of both front fenders also started peeling.. My daughter is embarrassed to drive the car, it looks like it came out of the junk yard.

I actually worked at the Honda East Liberty auto plant for 13 years. I knew we put out a great product from top to bottom so I had no problem with purchasing a 2009 Honda Civic directly from the dealer as employees do not get a very good discount and often times a much better deal (with much less wait time) can be had outside the employee purchase program I started to notice several years back that my roof and trunk paint appeared to be fading. Eventually this "fading paint" started to peel in little bits at first then after a while starting peeling in great measure. Having the experience of working in many different areas of the auto plant I had my suspicions as to what may have occurred somewhere in the painting / clear coat process that could have caused the clear coat to be coming off at the rapid pace it was now coming off at. I had a friend of mine at work who owned a 2006 Honda Civic and hers was also peeling in large areas on her roof and trunk area long before mine started doing the exact same thing. I instinctively knew right away that there were probably many, many other Honda autos affected in the same manner and started noticing other drivers on the road with the clear coat peeling on their Honda's. Since my car had finally paid off in 2014 and was still running great I eventually began to accept the fact that nothing would probably be done to address this clear coat problem unless others began to complain about the problem. Well, here is my complaint to see what might be out there to correct this sub-par clear coat process that Honda did not catch before it was too late as obviously many autos have made their way to the consumer.

I see that im not the only one with this issue .. I am so upset with honda.. i bought this car new in 2009 as well. then comes 2012 an my paint is fading . i had to get my car serviced before the recall now in 2016 my car looks like serious $hit. I called honda american and they gave me a month of a the run around going from one dealership to another just to tell me they will only cover $1500 of my paint job ($4500) the entire care needs to be painted . I would like to file a lawsuit against them along with anyone who is also going through this Corproate scam .. as you know it takes a team to get things to be taken seriously . I am a fighter and I will not let honda get away with this.. they robbed me of my money the moment they sold it to me.. having to service it for paint in just 3 years after purchase brand spanking new is a fraud...

My Honda is finally paid for and it looks like it is a hundred years old because the clear coat is coming off off it everywhere. My car was always easy to spot out in a busy Walmart parking lot because it was the cute little Honda with ugly patches of missing clear coat on the roof. Now it is on the doors and rest of the car. I ask about this problem and the most common question asked was. "Did you take your car through a bunch of car washes?" Lol, I'm not stupid. I never used dirty cloths or abusive machines. I am looking for help. I'm not wealthy or I would just go pay someone to paint my car. Insurance doesn't cover because it is cosmetic. Open for suggestions. Thanks for listening.

I started developing this roof paint cracking problem over the 6 months, initially it had a little bit of a dirty/scuffed appearance over the last year which I figured was due to dirt and could get buffed out when I had the time, then the clear coat paint started cracking and coming off.

I remember getting a notice about a warranty for this but this was 3 years ago prior to developing this problem, I did not get a notice for the warranty extension to 7 years but after taking it to the dealer they said that the extension expired as of 6 months ago which was around the time when the problem first started. I don't understand the warranty extension limits when the problem tends to develop several years later, after all I have relatively low usage of my car over the years and otherwise take good care of it.

I called Honda and they told me that they had to set limits on the warranty extension and long story short that I'm out of luck and have to pay out of pocket.

I just wanted to illustrate that Honda sold a car with a faulty paint job, and will not extend the warranty to fix it for all customers. Instead this should have just been flat recall for all the affected models to have it fixed even if the car hasn't shown signs of paint cracking yet, it will as I have discovered, and once you're over the warranty extension Honda does not care about you anymore.

It started with a little scratch and after a while the problem went to other areas. Later I was reading it is a problem in Honda.

I think that Honda need to take care of this. I have seen a lot of Honda cars with the same problem.
