Last Wednesday, I was driving from NY to Philly and my 2008 Honda Civic started overheating about halfway through the trip (the indicator was all the way to the top and the engine was whistling like a teakettle). I pulled off to a Pep Boys and had them inspect it, hoping it was a hose or loose fitting. They informed me the engine was flooded with coolant and advised me of a recall of the engine for my year of Civic. I had the car towed to my personal, trusted mechanic, who essentially said the same thing, and that he could replace the engine if I'd like.
Hoping to take advantage of the recall, I instead had the car towed to a Honda dealership the other day, and today they advised me my car would not qualify for the recall because they could not prove there was a leak in the engine block (someone mentioned something about the head gasket? I'm not a mechanic but it sounds like the same problem- crappy workmanship on the engine!!) My car is now a dead, derelict POS sitting in the Honda parking lot in need of an $8,000 repair.
I bought this car because of Honda's reputation for long-lasting, efficient cars. Well, mine made it to 120,000 miles. I challenge Honda to sell a Civic to someone by saying "yeah, these cars get up to 120000 miles!" I wouldn't have bought it if I'd known about this kind of stuff- and I didn't even tell you how bad the breaks are!! I wish they would own up to this problem and fix my engine.
