Since purchase of my used Honda Civic EX coupe in October 2011 I have experienced intermittent brake failure when going over rough road surfaces, braking when making a sharp right turn on a steep incline, and when making sudden stops. Two potential accidents were averted. The only solution appears to be depressing the brake pedal twice (double braking). When the problem occurs it feels like the brakes have slipped which allows for double braking. Sometimes a loud grinding sound has accompanied the brake failure.
The local Honda dealer was unable to identify the source of the problem during two visits and said it can only be repaired if replicated. The problem is of great concern due to the significant mileage I put on commuting to and from work.
