SRS internal unit failure at 79K miles. Car is 2005 Honda Civic and according to google searches and Civic forums this is a known problem with Honda vehicles (not just Civics) and Honda quotes a $800+ price to repair rather than standing by their vehicles. With the SRS light on, the airbags do not work, car cannot by smogged, and is a serious hazard to the drive and occupants until the expensive repair is made. Called Honda customer service and was told they would not lessen the cost, nor help cover the repair in any way.
