CarComplaints.com Notes: Yes, the Honda Civic receives a lot of complaints because so many were sold. And sure, car parts only last so long and things eventually break. But it's never good to see this many transmission complaints, especially when the average mileage at failure is just north of 100,000 miles.

Especially when you consider that it's predecessor also has a nasty history with transmission complaints.

Took car in for a couple of recalls and when I picked up the car the rod bearing slowly but surely started to get worse. Never heard a single noise prior to dealership taking possession of my car. Maybe it was just time for it or maybe it was related to the stealership visit. No way to prove it. I have serviced this vehicle from day one and have never had a problem with her. Always used Honda oil filters and the dealers recommended oil. I was hoping to get 300,000 miles out of her but guess that's not going to happen! Just makes me wonder if I am alone in this situation. I have always bragged up my Honda and now I am eating crow,

Civic 1.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 77,000 miles

this car has had a shifting transmission that goes into limbo mode since we got it at 45,000 miles. In Sept. water pump went bad and redid with timing belt then the thing sounded like it threw a rod? We hear it a trait with this model Civic (LX automatic) and so would like both replaced. We do not have the money! So pray Honda would like to stand behind this vehicle. Our son is trying to go to college and find a job to help out. It so is so troublesome. The car has been sitting now for more than a month. Is Honda willing to stand behind? SRS light has been on ever since too. Thank you Firedette

Civic EX 1.7L 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 130,000 miles

2 weeks after a complete transmission rebuild I heard a small rattle. Quickly grew louder and louder. Diagnosed as a bad rod bearing and requires a complete engine replacement.

Called Honda and asked for some goodwill based on the back-to-back problems. I was told the car was too old with too many miles. Seems they don't expect their cars to go more than 130,000.

Your choice: take the car to the dealership for all maintenance and pay 2x the cost for everything OR be left out in the cold when you have a major problem.

I told them I would never buy another Honda, at least Toyota fixes their problems.
