CarComplaints.com Notes: Yes, the Honda Civic receives a lot of complaints because so many were sold. And sure, car parts only last so long and things eventually break. But it's never good to see this many transmission complaints, especially when the average mileage at failure is just north of 100,000 miles.
Especially when you consider that it's predecessor also has a nasty history with transmission complaints.

My Engine Check light came on and brought it to get checked out. Error was P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0300 codes - misfires on cylinders and random misfires. I felt no loss of power but felt the car idled rough at time. Mechanic did a tune up on the car (new plugs, wires, etc). 3 months later, Engine Check light came on again so I brought it to another repair shop that specializes on Hondas. Codes were P0301 and P0300 - They said I had the wrong brand of plugs so they replaced the plugs with them with the OEM brand. They also heard ticking noises so they performed a valve adjustment. They cleared the codes 3 DAYs later, Engine Check light came on again, P0301 and P0304. Couldn't find problem but said the valves need adjustment again - which they did. They cleared the codes 2 1/2 Months later, Engine Check light came on again - so we replaced timing belt, etc. 4 /2 Months later, Engine Check light came on again - cylinder misfires. They checked the Secondary ignition and coil packs and said they were OK. They switched wired from one plug to other plugs to see if codes follow the wires - it was inconsistent. They cleared the codes and said to try it. 8 months later, Engine Check light came on again - misfires again. They recommended another valve adjustment - which I had them do. In addition, just to make sure, they also replaced all 4 ignition coils. They cleared the codes and said to try it. They said they replaced everything except for the fuel injectors and if the light came on again, they recommend I replace the fuel injectors. Since they haven't been able to find the "root" problem and I have just been pay for them to replace parts they suspect are the culprit (they justified it by saying the parts are old and I will need to change them soon anyway), I decided to buy my own OBDC II scanner so I can check the codes and turn off the Engine Check light). Needless to say, the Engine Check light has continually been coming on regularly between 100 to 500 miles with misfiring codes (primarily P0301, P0303 and P0300 codes) and I have been reviewing the codes to make sure nothing new has popped up and just resetting the light. I have been reading about Engine Check issues on the internet and there isn't a clear "root" cause for this persistent problem. I don't have a lot of money to keep replacing parts on a 10 year old car without some assurance that the problem will be fixed. . More importantly, I don't know if this is causing long term damage to my car.
I have owned 3 Hondas and each of them seem to have major problem around 120,000 miles - I am so frustrated and disappointed with Honda and will need to look at other brands in the future.
