CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2001 Civic has transmission problems, transmission problems & more transmission problems. Did we mention transmission problems? And a dangerous defect with the front airbag that didn't get recalled for 10 years.
Although eventually the defective 2001 Civic airbag inflators were fixed under recalls in 2011 & 2013, that meant for 10 to 12 years airbags were activating with excessive force where metal fragments went shooting into passengers when the airbag deployed.
As for the 2001 Civic's transmission woes? Honda conducted a major transmission recall in 2004 & settled a class action lawsuit for defective transmissions in 2006. But, neither the recall or the lawsuit included the 2001 Civic.
Last thing to consider - the 2001 Civic is the most-recalled car ever, closely followed by the 2002 Civic & the 2001 Accord. The 2001 Civic is the 4th most-recalled vehicle overall, only a Ford truck & two Ford vans have more.
I called both the 800 number for Honda and local dealer. Both said this problem was not covered, despite what I've read here. Am I missing something? Safety issue, right?
My SRS light stays on. Took it to dealership. They charged $70 for scan and I was told that it is a seat belt buckle problem. They will replace it for $340 plus taxes. It is really annoying specially considering many people are having same problem.
Glad I did my research on this one (Google is my friend).
I noticed that one day that the SRS light wouldn't go off as it normally does a few seconds after starting my car's engine. After doing some research, common consensus on the 'net says that it's likely due to either a sensor issue, or a seat belt buckle (both of which can be diagnosed at a dealership in minutes by a read-out of the car's computer system). In any case, for the sensor, Honda had extended the warranty to 10yr/150Kmiles or something like that, and if it was a seat belt issue, that should be covered under the standard Honda lifetime seat belt warranty.
Turns out mine was caused by a sensor in the driver-side seat belt buckle having failed. I don't know if the guys at the dealership I went to would have tried to charge me for the diagnosis or the labor or the part if I hadn't flat-out mentioned my knowledge of Honda's lifetime seat belt warranty, but I didn't want to find out. They ordered the part, and two days later, it arrived, I brought my car back in, and they replaced it in about 30 minutes.
Not a major complaint (compared to some other things, like the transmission having to be rebuilt last year), but still disconcerting that the airbags would not have deployed during that two day period if I needed it.
The dsl light comes on and the buzzing begins from somewhere inside the dash. The buzzing only stops when the headlights are turned on. When the light are turned off, the melody recommences.

I bought a my civic from Carmax (which I'll add was a poor poor poor idea), so they handled my warranty claims. I had the car serviced there several times for the same problem. I don't remember all the previous dates but it was over a 3 year period. The SRS light in this car goes on all the time, sometimes it goes off on its own, sometimes it stays on for months until I take it in and have the codes cleared. The sensor has been replaced already, and everyone, including the dealer, has a different explanation for why the light goes on. I've been told it's a weight issue, that if there is weight either front seat and the seat belt isn't on than it activates the light. I've also been told that a cell phone anywhere in the front seat interferes with the sensor and causes it to fail. Also that bumps in the road can cause it to fail. Well, if any of these are true and the airbag system can fail based on any of that, its a serious safety hazard. In any case, I am just annoyed that the dealer (which carmax had to send the car to each time) hasn't been able to resolve the issue after 3 years.
I drove corolla's since 1982, I never ever had any problems of any sort for 22 years; then I heard honda were also good..., what a deception. There is so much rattling noises coming from the front end that I am getting arthritis out of it. SRS light on all the time is telling me that the air bag can blow off in my face at any time so I drive with the seat backed up to the maximum. DRL on all the time with its accompanied buzzer forces me to have all the lights on all the time. Dont forget them there not automatic. Good thing dough all the rattles coming from the cabin and the suspension well covers that buzzer. When I loose the front weels and scrap the car the only thing I will recuperate is that Vise-Grip used to open the trunk.
I haven't used my car for two weeks. It was sitting in my driveway as I went on vacation. Today, I vacuumed my car and cleaned the dash. Then I fired it up to go for a drive and the SRS & DRL light stays on. Furthermore, whenever I hit the gas pedal, a very very loud squeaky noise is heard from under the car. Does anyone know what this is?

Seat belts are covered for life on Honda. Never had anything like this happened on any other car.
