CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2001 Civic has transmission problems, transmission problems & more transmission problems. Did we mention transmission problems? And a dangerous defect with the front airbag that didn't get recalled for 10 years.

Although eventually the defective 2001 Civic airbag inflators were fixed under recalls in 2011 & 2013, that meant for 10 to 12 years airbags were activating with excessive force where metal fragments went shooting into passengers when the airbag deployed.

As for the 2001 Civic's transmission woes? Honda conducted a major transmission recall in 2004 & settled a class action lawsuit for defective transmissions in 2006. But, neither the recall or the lawsuit included the 2001 Civic.

Last thing to consider - the 2001 Civic is the most-recalled car ever, closely followed by the 2002 Civic & the 2001 Accord. The 2001 Civic is the 4th most-recalled vehicle overall, only a Ford truck & two Ford vans have more.

Vehicle manufacturer's fuel hose clamp recall ( #01V182000 ) was inadequately repaired by technicians of a vehicle repair company conducting initial safety inspection of vehicle, prior to registration of vehicle, and there is no known provision requiring a review of any alleged repairs by that vehicle repair company in Accord with the recall itself, whereas a strong odor of fuel continuously fills passenger compartment through air vents when travelling in vehicle, and vehicle repair company refuses to review work of technicians in the interest of safety of vehicle's passengers and other innocent persons in Accord with basis for manufacturer's issuance of recall. Vehicle is only workable means of transportation, and continuous odor of fuel affects passengers personally and substantially, based on there existing no known provision requiring review of work of technicians. Employees of vehicle manufacturer was contacted by phone, and they revealed that there are no known policies or provisions requiring review of technician attempts to repair fuel hose clamp recall upon allegations of strong odor of fuel clouding passenger compartment when vehicle in operation; employees of vehicle manufacturer appear to cover up allegations of inadequate repair of fuel hose clamp recall by reviewing technicians, thus providing for potentially dangerous vehicle (reeking of odor of fuel) to operate on public roadways.

Engine and cooling system. Every part of the cooling system was checked and replaced including thermostat, water pump, timing belt, radiator, and all hoses. After running several diagnostic tests the car was showing no codes but would still overheat at times causing terrible situations on the highways. Please fix this

I received a 2001 Honda Civic LX from my dad as a gift around the end of April, 2018. Which he had spent about 2000 in the motor before giving it to me. The issues occurred with the car over heating right when we landed into las vegas which we were coming from san dimas California, it took about 3-4 hours to get back home. I had issues with my car over heating a lot which had to do with the sensors at first which had gotten replaced. Than after the fan to cool down the radiator wasn't working properly to where only one fan would kick in. Now out of no where my car had issues accelerating which should be investigated before somebody really gets hurt. From all the reviews thank god in the long run everybody is okay but in order for this to be recalled it's like people need to be injured or deaths need to really occur before when things like this should be fixed so serious problems don't occur in leads to death. I almost got side swiped when I had no choice but to try to move to saftey really slow which I didn't have control of the car moving at that paste when it wouldn't move any faster than what it wwas.since I found out my car having issues on accelerating and being able to move around I find out there is the air bag recall which I receive a paper in mail to fix but how when I can't even get there. It's the end of July 2018 in which my car is officially unable to be moved. So many problems within 3 months and so much money wasted it's ridiculous.

The contact owns a 2001 Honda Civic. While driving, the contact noticed a fuel odor throughout the vehicle. While the accelerator pedal was depressed, the fuel odor became stronger and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to West broad Honda at (804) 672-1111 (7014 w broad St, richmond, va 23294), but the failure could not be replicated. The contact was advised to take the vehicle to West broad collision center at (804) 217-6354 (9001 w broad St, richmond, va 23294) where the mechanic stated that he smelled a strong fuel odor and that the vehicle would need to be taken back to West broad Honda. West broad Honda diagnosed that the fuel pump module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the contact was informed that the battery needed to be replaced and the radiator was cracked and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 01V182000 (fuel system, gasoline) and NHTSA campaign number: 01V183000 (fuel system, gasoline). The manufacturer was not notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 71,000.

The drivers and passengers airbags did not deploy during a frontal impact crash involving a Honda Civic and GMC Yukon truck. My vehicle the Honda Civic was heading on a two-lane street at approximately 35 to 40 miles per hour before impact into a stopped truck making a left turn across oncoming traffic while Honda was in motion the brakes were applied. Cause is unknown at this time on why the airbags did not deploy. All recalls have been complied with for the 2001 Honda Civic. Recall 13V-132: Recall 14V-351 completed. Number of open recalls are zero at this time.

Started car drove it to work, about a mile into drive engine stalled, car started to sputter, then stall again. Took to mechanic, it was a faulty ignition switch. 1997-2000 Honda Civic models were involved in a faulty ignition switch recall, I wonder if 2001 should have been included as well.

I was traveling in neighborhood streets (30 mph speed limit), and without warning, the car's automatic transmission slipped out of gear and would not engage the engine again. Pressing on the gas pedal would only result in revving the engine, much like in neutral setting. The major key problem here is the transmission failed without any prior signs of distress, failure, warning and etc. I was lucky in that I was traveling on neighborhood streets and could easily pull over to the curb; this would have been a major issue for me and others traveling on the highway at 80 mph in the middle of the highway... this issue has been well documented on sites such as this: www.carcomplaints.com/Honda/Civic/2001/transmission/transmission_failure.shtml.

The check engine light came on while we were on the highway. After checking the code and the fluids we continued driving with no issues. The code did not say anything about the transmission going out. After 15 miles the cars transmission gave out with no warning leaving us stranded in a town with no Honda dealership.

We got into a head on collision with a SUV receiving damage to the front of the car. None of the airbags deployed, but both deployed in the other car (SUV). There were two recalls for our Honda Civic airbags in 2010 and 2013. In both recalls our Honda Civic was serviced and the "driver airbag inflator" was replaced. We were told the repairs were made, but the airbags never deployed. We do not want this to happen to anyone else.

Upon entering expressway, going to change lanes - transmission totally failed. Nothing but engine reving when pushing on accelerator. No warning lights, nothing. Almost got killed due to truck having to stop as we coasted off highway. Upon having vehicle towed to dealer (Honda lisle) and going on line I find that this is a very common occurrence for this vehicle and model year. Why has there not been a recall notice on this. This is truly a danger to the drivers of this vehicle. There are thousands of similar experiences posted online.

I was yet another unfortunate victim of Honda's cheap transmission and I say cheap in that it doesn't work properly not that it is cheap to get it repaired. No that is over $2000 according to my local Honda dealership. After taking such good care of my car diligently taking it in for oil changes and tune ups at Honda's recommended mileage; I am severely disappointed. I had just pulled up to a busy stop light, when the light turned green I hit the gas and my car moved forward like usual, but suddenly right as I past the intersection the car's transmission started slipping and then just died. I shut the car off, started it back up and some how after a few minutes managed to get the transmission to hold just enough to pull it into a turn off. I had numerous people honking and yelling at me to get off the road. Honda if you're listening, I won't be buying another vehicle from you. NHTSA if you're listening please I implore you to do an investigation this could very likely cause someone to get hurt or killed.
