CarComplaints.com Notes: Haven't we all owned one of these things at some point? Despite being a popular first car for teenage drivers and, as a result, being beat up like no other, the late 90's Civic is a true endurance car. And it still gets better gas mileage than more modern cars.

This summer my 1999 Honda Civic EX started losing power while I was driving. It could happen on the freeway at 65 mph or coasting to a stop. There would be a quiet "click" and the engine would die, radio would turn off, DEAD. It would restart when I turned the key, but very scary. When I took it in to my mechanic he found that it was the ignition switch causing the problem. He fould out that it had been recalled about 8 years ago. He sent it over to the Honda dealership and it was replaced for free. I haven't had any problems since. Hope this helps someone.
This problem happened to me several times, just like the people above wrote...it's like it is all textbook. I hope that the subscribers above have some advice or anyone else can help out. The car literally just stops running -- and also has been hesitant to start of late, not sure if this is related or not -- at random times. Recently it stopped on a 4 lane highway while I was going 60 and it was very scary. Just as the person said above, all of the electrical items such as lights and radio stayed on. I pulled over, put the car in park and it started up.
I'm in the process of looking for a new car as I'm in my car a lot for work and this just isn't safe, it could be deadly for myself and other motorists. I had it into my mechanic 3 times and they said they can't find anything wrong since it's not happening when they have it.
I feel that 117,000 miles for a 99 Civic is basically middle age. If I can get this fixed I would really prefer that to a car payment if I can get another 4-5 years out of this from even a $1,000.00 repair...it's worth it. Please help, and thank you all.
I HAVE A 99 HONDA CIVIC EX CAN NOT FIGURE OUT PROBLEM BELIEVE IT IS ENGINE RELATED IT IS STALLING WHILE DRIVING. NOT SURE HAD IT TO MECHANIC AT LEAST FOUR TIMES IN THE LAST TWO MONTHS. OF COURSE IT WONT DO THE PROBLEM FOR THE MECHANIC. HELP ANY ADVICE
The engine quits while slowing to a stop or while driving at a constant speed. The speedometer drops to zero and it coasts, but no other electrical system fails. The starter works and the engine restarts, only to quit after 2 seconds. This lasts for about a minute or two, then the next attempt to start is successful, and it runs fine.
