CarComplaints.com Notes: It's rare when a newer vehicle has defect trends, & the 2017 Honda CR-V has at least two — overfilled oil levels with a gas smell, & heat not working.

Both problems affecting the Honda CR-V's 1.5L "Earth Dreams" engine appear to be related to cold-climate regions.

CR-V owners report overfilled oil levels due to fuel in the oil, & sometimes a gas smell in the cabin. That problem appears to be related to fuel injection which Honda hopes to fix via a software update. Honda so far has only conducted a recall in China & a "product update" in Canada.

CR-V owners also report no heat even after warming up their CR-Vs for 30 minutes — not even enough to defrost the windshield. So far, there has been no fix from Honda for this issue.

Winter is in Northern Ontario in full force. -20 to -30C below zero. My 2017 Honda CRV 1.5 litre does not warm up! It blows cold air at stop signs. The windows are fogging and it is very difficult to thaw them. Brought my car into my Timmins dealership and was advised that all 1.5 Honda CRVs are having a hard time producing heat when it is very cold. I have had many similar smaller engine vehicles before this Honda and never had a problem with heat.

This is my first Honda CRV and I'm really disappointed. When I checked other online sites, I see that everyone is having the same problem.Surely a large company like Honda could do something about this. Is the 2018 the same? I am wondering if a different thermostat with a higher heat would be available and solve this problem. Hoping there is a solution to this problem....

As others, told car takes forever to heat up in very cold days the gauge will drop to 0 and blow cold air. I took to the dealer, they said they know about it and waiting for Honda to tell a fix. I called Honda USA and put a complaint in and they told me they won't do anything. I turned this over to my atty for the lemon law. Where can you spend $340000 and be cold in a car? Unreal! Don't they test the car in cold temps?

2017 CRV EX-L warms up extremely slow. Even once it is completely warmed up, temperature gauge will drop back to cold and air out of vents will be cold when idling for any amount of time. You must be driving to get any heat.

Took it to dealership (Bowling Green OH), and they initially agreed that should not happen when I showed them. However, after checking out the car for a day and comparing it to other new 2017 CRV's, they said that they all do this. They were sympathetic and professional and agreed this should not be happening. They did mention that when you are at idle and the blower in the car is on high, there is a 'secondary fan' that runs on the radiator (or something to that effect) that could be cooling it back down very quickly. They recommended I experiment with the blower to see if makes it any better.

I think I might have to mount a hair dyer in the car to defrost the windows in the morning :-) Thanks goodness for the heated seats!

Update from Jan 31, 2019: I had the Product Update applied to the vehicle. Campaign #6DU / Service Bulletin #18-114. The heater works noticeably better than before the update. I still would not call it a great heater...but it does warm up even in very cold temps...after using remote start, the car is somewhat warmed up even in sub zero temperatures (before the update remote start did nothing to warm up the car).

CR-V LX 2.4L

I purchased this CRV in April 2017. The heat wasn't necessary due to the warm summer and mild fall months so the problem was not obvious. Then, the cold came quickly and heat was necessary. The CRV simply takes forever to warm up, whether at idle or under load. This is my 3rd CRV. I never had an issue with the previous ones. I am aware that warming up cars under idle conditions takes longer than under a load. I am also aware that some may think pre-warming a vehicle is not good for it. I can leave the car running for 30 minutes and the temp gauge never rises off of "C". Forget a remote starter in this vehicle. It will be a waste of money. There is nothing wrong with my CRV. The coolant level is where it should be. Whatever was changed should be returned to it's previous configuration. Even under a load, it takes at least 4 miles at highway speed for the coolant gauge to reach an area that shows normal operating temp but still. the heat is barely warm, not hot. The only thing I can think of that could be causing the issue is a faulty thermostat. I intend on calling the dealer but reluctant as they usually come back with the "nothing wrong with it" answer.

CR-V Touring 1.5L Turbo

In cold weather (-5C and below) the 2017 Honda CR-V (Touring) takes way too long to warm up. I start the vehicle with the factory remote starter and 10 minutes later the vehicle is still cold and the windshield still has frost on it. I add 10 minutes to the warm up and notice little improvement. I still have frost and ice to scrape off. My drive to work is eight minutes and during the drive the temperature climbs but when I am at a red light the temperature gauge drops. When I arrive at work the heater is blowing out warm air but the cabin is still very cool.

This did not happen with my 2010 Honda Accord. Very quick to heat up. I started it at the same time and in 10 minutes car was warm. In 20 minutes almost hot. I never, ever saw the temperature gauge drop while at a red light.

Knowing I have four more months of cold weather to deal with diminishes my enjoyment of this vehicle. I am going to order a block heater to see if it helps but I should not have to. They should have anticipated this problem and installed more electric heaters in the cabin.
