CarComplaints.com Notes: It's rare when a newer vehicle has defect trends, & the 2017 Honda CR-V has at least two — overfilled oil levels with a gas smell, & heat not working.

Both problems affecting the Honda CR-V's 1.5L "Earth Dreams" engine appear to be related to cold-climate regions.

CR-V owners report overfilled oil levels due to fuel in the oil, & sometimes a gas smell in the cabin. That problem appears to be related to fuel injection which Honda hopes to fix via a software update. Honda so far has only conducted a recall in China & a "product update" in Canada.

CR-V owners also report no heat even after warming up their CR-Vs for 30 minutes — not even enough to defrost the windshield. So far, there has been no fix from Honda for this issue.

CR-V EX-L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 45,000 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

2017 Honda CRV. When it hit around 45k miles last April 2022, it started having high pitch sounds coming from the hood and then the AC just started blowing not cool air. Took to the dealership and they said the discharge hose was leaking oil and also the front of AC compressor seal was bad and leaking out the front of compressor. Had to have my compressor replaced for 2100$ out of pocket.

Then 5 months later (Sept/Oct 2022), there was a new blowing sound that comes and goes that will stop immediately when the AC gets turned off. Took back to the dealership and they said that the fan motor needs to be replaced. Took my car to an independent mechanic who said the sound was coming from the thermal expansion valve or evaporator. Took the car again to the dealership and they're taking a look at it again. I'm done with this car. Should I just sell it once it gets repaired?

CR-V EX 1.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 11,500 miles

I only have 11,500 miles on this 2017 CR-V EX AWD that I ordered new and received in August of 2017. This car is stored for 6 months at a time in AZ. I am a snowbird here. The AC was completely out upon my return 6 months later on 10/18/21. I took it to Arrowhead Honda in Peoria, AZ to have it checked. They told me the front seal was out, and to fix it, they need to replace the compressor at the tune of $1500. Unbelievable. The dealership was very good and me back on the road in about 3 hours, so my complaint is strictly at Honda itself.

CR-V Touring 1.5t

  • Manual transmission
  • 48,000 miles

Wife stated that it takes a long time for the A/C to cool the vehicle. After riding in it and experiencing the issue, I looked around the engine and could see where oil/refrigerant had sprayed out of the discharge hose. Took it to the dealer who said it needed a new compressor and discharge hose. Quoted me $2,350. My understanding is that the CRV engine and parts are the same as the Civic, which has a ton of complaints about the A/C. This is WAY too early to be spending that kind of money on a repair, especially considering it was driven very little last year due to COVID.

A Honda CR-V with 54,000 miles on it and the A/C compressor is being replaced NOT under any warranty. 2200 dollars! What a waste of money.

CR-V EX-L 1.5L Turbo

  • CVT transmission
  • 14,856 miles

I have had my 2017 Honda CRV EX-L for about 1 year and 5 months and for the most part I love ... I don't envy all the problems most of the consumers are facing with this vehicle and I am surprised for Honda that there are so many complaints. But I have one gripe and that is my A/C would cool at idle but not when I take off. I took the CRV to Fisher Honda in Ypsilanti, Michigan and they ran a pressure check and their were no leaks anywhere on A/C unit, compressor, accumulator, evaporator. They informed me that it was not pressurized at the manufacturer because they received same concerns from 6 other customers.

However, after leaving with the SUV, it worked ok for one day and started up again. So rather than take it to the same dealer unfixed, I took it to Genthe Honda in Southgate, Michigan. To make a long story short they did an even more extensive check and found the A/C pressure switch attached to the Drier had frayed wires causing the A/C Compressor not to turn on thinking the inside temp was cool and it wasn't. So they put electrical tape on the wires and all is good. The car has cold air now so cold I have to lower it or turn it off. Kudo's to Genthe Honda.

CR-V LX 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 1,890 miles

On March 12, 2018 while driving my 2017 Honda CR-V (mileage at the time was 1,898) the air conditioning was not cooling the car and the instrument panel went black, the directional signals and lights did not work. I had to drive from Huntington Beach to Irvine, CA on the 405 freeway with no turn signals and not knowing my speed.

After reaching home, I called Norm Reeves Honda to report the issue for servicing. Because I was afraid to drive the vehicle with these safety issues, I had it towed to this dealer (the closest to home) for repair as it is under full warranty.

When they received the car the AC and instrument panel lights, directional signals and exterior lights were working again. With my consent the Service Manager drove the vehicle home and back on 3/13/18 to see if the problem would replicate. It did not happen again so they did not repair or resolve this safety defect and I had to get my vehicle on Wednesday, March 14.

Neither Honda nor this dealer are standing behind this vehicle or supporting me as the consumer. I have filed a claim with Honda and so far they have done nothing to support getting this safety problem fixed. The repeated response from Honda and the dealer is we can't fix the problem until we can replicate it. I am left driving a new vehicle that I cannot trust as safe and reliable. When the issue occurs it creates a major safety concern because there is no ability to know the driving speed, to have working directional signals and lights. It is putting the driver and passengers at risk as well as others on the road. There is clearly an issue with the electrical and/or computer system.
