But recently at 23,000 miles the transmission seems to be hunting. Engaging and disengaging randomly while coasting and light acceleration. The jarring sensation at lower speeds feels almost like cracks in the road jerking the car. Coasting at highway speeds and again on mild acceleration the transmission hooks up and lets go randomly. The jerking at highway speed is more than enough to scare a seasoned driver. This in-gear out of gear dance can't be good for anything. I begin my stand off with the dealer on wednesday. From the day we bought our 2015 CRV, it's been suffering annoying hesitation (shuddering) on gentle acceleration. At first, we thought it was the tires losing traction, even though roads were dry. Then we thought it was an issue with fuel injection, and feared that the engine was going to stall. Then we determined that the transmission was slipping. We have had numerous attempts at fixing the problem, and have taken our dealer's head mechanic for a drive for about an hour (with a monitor on his lap), and had updates done to the CVT software.
The August, 2016 letter from Honda Canada regarding the CVT software update was very concerning, because it indicated that CVT belt slippage could result in damage to the transmission.
We would like this issue resolved as quickly as possible in order to avoid costly — and possibly dangerous — damage to our CRV’s transmission.
Update from Jan 10, 2021: I persisted with the dealer and the service adviser supported me with Honda Canada. The dealer replaced the transmission at no charge.
Check with your local TV, radio and newspaper consumer reporter to see if they're interested in intervening on your behalf.
If you don't get satisfaction, I'd suggest telling the dealer and Honda USA that you will picket the dealership until the problem is resolved (and you'll invite the media along for the ride).
