For months my CR-V had been flashing a "check fuel cap" warning message on my dashboard. So, naturally, I checked the fuel cap and everything seemed fine. I figured maybe I had put the cap on wrong the last time I filled up with gas. But the message kept coming back after each fill up, even when I ensured the cap was properly shut by clicking it 3 times.
Sure, you can disable the message, but that just hides it temporarily -- it kept coming back like a lost puppy, minus the cute eyes and fluffy coat. Sometimes the message would be there as soon as I started the vehicle, other times it wouldn't show up for 10 minutes. But it was always there, lurking ... waiting to annoy me.
I finally brought my CR-V in to a certified Honda dealership and hoped they believed that I knew how to put a freakin' fuel cap on despite what the car was saying. They looked into it and "couldn't replicate the issue" -- how typical is that? However, they believed me and went ahead and replaced the purge control valve thinking there must be some restriction in the valve itself.
So far, so good -- but I'll report back if the haunted message comes back. Until then I'll see a flashing "CHECK FUEL CAP" message in my nightmares.
