The CRV steering rack boots tear earlier than they should (~40k miles seems consistent for this model). The torn boots cause debris to enter and surround the seal and eventually destroys the seals.

I am unsure of when the boots tore on my car, but both seals started leaking around 70k miles.

Once the seals leak, the only repair is a complete replacement/rebuild of the rack and pinion.

This is costing me $1540.31

This seems like a common problem and Honda should provide an extended warranty on the rack and pinion, or at least a recall on the boots! Had the boots been replaced before tearing, their would be no additional issue!

This is my third Honda..first two were a dream.. Honda Civic 1981 103,000 11yrs old, all that went wrong was a water pump.. Gave to a friend's son and he drove it another 50K and still working but sitting in barn on their farm. Second was a 1998 Honda Accord EX 113,000 miles on it when after almost 13 yrs to the month..buying this 2010 on New Years Eve 2009. December 2014 we have had this CRV and will be paid off this month..ONLY 35000 miles..DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS LEAKING POWER STEERING FLUID FROM RACK AND PINION.. And then to have a four wheel alignment AND power steering fluid flushed, if it was leaking it would have all come out by now?? Makes me feel that my run with HONDA IS over!!
