After further research, all CR-V's have this problem eventually because the compressor is situated in a position that is too close to the ground. There is no guard to keep all the dirt and debris out of the A/C condenser clutch housing. Newer models have a protective guard to help prevent the dirt from causing this problem. Upon condenser replacement, I've fabricated an aluminum guard that will help to protect the new condenser. I'll update if something goes wrong in the future.
BTW, this is the only repair this vehicle has ever had. The airbags were recall replaced but zero repairs in total at 183,000 and still going strong. No oil burning, no transmission issues, no engine issues, no 4x4 issues and no other issues whatsoever. And I should have bought two of these vehicles!
2009 Honda CR-V is and has been a very reiable car. The A/C compressor failed at 170,000 so I'm not compaining too much about the $750. I bought the compressor and asked my mechanic if it could be installed for labor costs. Okay... Shortly after the compressor was replaced a relay went bad but it was only an hour of labor to diagnose and repair. That amount is included in the $750 total repair. Later the heat stopped flowing through the system. After research on Honda CR-V forum, I found the simplest of solutions! There is an electrical connector under the driver side dash to the right of the steering wheel, simply unplug the connector, the only one visible there, then plug it back in. Voila! It works! Heat is now pouring out just in time for winter! D.I.Y. BABY!
I was heading to Drs. office on one of our hottest days in June and found the A/C putting out only hot air. After that, it would work cold on the less hot days but this last week our temps have been really high so I took it in to our regular mechanic who said the clutch was sticking so he fixed that for $85. It's 1 day later now and still as hot and it's not working again by only putting out hot air but for awhile today it was working. I've heard this is a very common issue with the older models like ours and that Honda is aware of it. If it wasn't so hot and humid, I'd let it go for now but it comes down to either fixing it or staying home. Honda did extend the warranty on the AC units to 100K miles. I'm over that. Just my luck
Unfortunately the AC quit working coming back from Eagle Pass, Texas in summer of 2017. The temperatures are in the 90's, it was terrible to drive with kids and pets and no AC. My entire system had to be replaced. I never, ever have had any problems with Hondas in my entire life. This is very unacceptable for a company like Honda. The QA/QC of their cars is not the same like before. Spent $1,600 to fix the issue, because impossible to be with no AC in Texas!!!

I was shocked to found out today from the mechanic after several days without A/C in 100 to 102 degree heat in Texas that my car 2009 CR-V compressor in not working and will cost around $1100 to $1300 to fix. This is ridiculous, I don't have this money at this time when kids are going back to college and extended warranty ran out in June.
I bought this car used, as a Honda Certified Used Car, and was told it was in perfect condition. After a month, it started making noise as soon as it was started, that got louder as you accelerated. I called the dealership who maintained the CRV before I bought it, and again they said it was in perfect condition. I took it to my independent mechanic, who immediately knew it had major problems. It needed a new compressor, belt, and tensioner. A week and $1100 later I now have a car in good condition.
