Its not unheard of for transmissions to fail. However, given most cars today are being built to last to 150-200k miles, the transmission failing so far before the rest of the car is a big problem. If you're looking to buy a used CRV of the same vintage, please make sure you consider the $1600 you may get stuck with if you have to repair/rebuild your transmission.
