We bought this car new and when we bought it and for many years after my Honda dealer told us this engine would last for 300k miles. Well, it is at 168k and the engine loses oil, fast. We had every visible leak on the car fixed and an oil control valve fixed that failed. However, no repair has stopped the oil usage. Several mechanics have studied the car with no resolution. One said that Honda installed faulty oil piston seals, but he would have to take the engine apart to discover the cause. Finally, a dealer's mechanic proclaimed that the piston rings were shot! On that comment I said, "What about Honda's claim this engine will last 300 thousand miles?" He had no answer. His comment was BS since the engine has almost as much pep as when we bought it and will squeal tires. So, today I took it to the dealer hoping that maybe I could trade it for something new and discovered that in Honda's eyes, the car is worthless to them. So much for the Kelly Blue Book estimate. Kind of got the feeling they know what's wrong.

CR-V EX 2.4L 4-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 40,000 miles

This is a great car, but the oil consumption rate is ridiculous. It is now burning through a quart of oil in about 500 miles, although there is no noticeable black smoke. I know there was a suit and settlement for this problem for other model years, but I clearly have the same problem with my 2004 CR-V. Being told that the "normal" oil consumption rate for this engine is a quart/1000 miles is patently absurd.

I've purchased multiple new Hondas over the years and I feel that they owe me a reasonable fix for what is obviously a design problem.

I see that newer models are said to burn oil excessively but my 2004 CRV does it too. When I took it to Honda they first tried to tell me I didn't know how to read the dipstick! I told them then why was the oil completely gone after less than 3000 miles from an oil change? I have to add a quart of oil every couple of weeks. The Honda dealer has never found anything wrong and they claim it is "normal."
