problem #3

Accord Touring V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 300 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

I'm not sure how to describe this issue from a technical standpoint, but the while traveling (usually accelerating) anywhere up to 50mph, the transmission seems to go into a low grumble gear. The RPMs hang around 1,800 and there's an irritating vibration. If you let off the gas, or speed up, it finds it proper gear and the vibration and noise go away. It occurs while in Econ and normal driving modes.

I can't seem to figure out what to do to reliably replicate the issue, but it happens on a daily basis. It does seem to happen when you're having to adjust your speed with traffic. If you're just cruising at a constant speed, it won't be doing it (though it may when you were accelerating to that speed until it shifted into another gear).

I've taken it to the dealer for this issue, but they couldn't replicate the problem. They told me to let them know if it keeps doing it and try to observe the weather, engine temperature, etc. I've taken it in a second time for another issue and reported that it's still happening. The weather doesn't make a difference, and the engine temp is always below half.

Accord EX-L 2.4L-L, 4-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 165 miles

Picked up a New Honda Accord EX-L at about 4:30 p.m. 12/31/2016, New Year's Eve. Driving home (about 10 miles), heard noises from under the hood. Sounded like aluminum foil being scrunched. Dealership was closed on the following day, January 1, 2016. Brought New Honda back in for service, and was told after about three hours of diagnosis, that there was something wrong with the transmission. I only have about 165 miles on the New Honda. This is STUPID. I told the dealership I did not want the vehicle.

Update from Jan 5, 2016: Jan 4 2016 late afternoon: Honda dealer tells me that the transmission is bad and must be replaced. Dealership is looking for a 're-manufactured' i.e. 'used' transmission to fix the problem. I can't imagine a re-manufactured transmission is available yet for a 2016 vehicle.
Jan 5, 2016 morning: Filed a complaint with American Honda to get a full refund. I purchased this vehicle in good faith and for the usual intended purpose of driving it safety for many years, but this is a risk and a burden for me now. This is an opportunity for Honda engineers to take this vehicle back and fully analyze it for the stated problem and possibly find the root cause and facilitate a redesign to make a CVT type transmission better. I was referred to a Honda Case Manager to discuss my concerns, with a guaranteed call back in 1-3 business day.

Update from Jan 22, 2016: The dealership only wanted to install a used transmission. I insisted on a refund and put in a claim with Honda America (Corporate division). The dealership then said they could get a remanufactured transmission. Again, I insisted on a full refund. Then 1 week later (Jan 8, 2016) I receive a letter from their lawyer insisting they have the right to repair the defect. When I did not agree, and insisted on a full refund, they had my new vehicle towed to a local police station and issued a 'no trespass' order to keep me out of the dealership. Honda America on 1/21 called me to indicate that they will repurchase the vehicle from me. I had it towed from the police station to another Honda dealer who was very helpful. Honda America has not decided yet whether to have the vehicle towed back to Honda for analysis or have the 2nd dealer repair it and sell it as a used/fixed vehicle. .

Update from Jan 31, 2016: Jan 27 Honda America has agreed to repurchase my vehicle. working with another dealership who has custody of the vehicle. Still driving a rental car.

Update from Feb 22, 2016: 2/12/2016 Honda took back the vehicle. I no longer own it.

Update from Jun 27, 2016: Late Feb 2016, received full refund from American Honda for repurchase of this 2016 Homda Accord EX. March 7, 2016, finally receive my full refund on the extended warranty which was NOT a Honda warranty as I was led to believe. The 3rd party extended warranty was not 'funded' on 12/31/2015 when I purchased the vehicle and was not 'funded' until approximately February 4, 2016, so I was unable to utilize the warranty guarantees, i.e. car rental. Never purchase an extended warranty. It is not worth it.
