Around April of 2018, I took my car to the mechanic when the engine light came on. He told me I needed oil. I had my oil changed recently and could believe it was out so soon. This occurred again August 15, 2018. I placed oil in it and took it to the dealer. Now, today, my mechanic found that my cylinder and a spark plug needs repair and attributed it to excessive oil consumption. I looked this problem up online to learn that is common with Honda Accords and a class action was won for owners. I called the Honda warrenty department and they will not cover my damages. They said my vin number was not included.

I noticed ever since Jan. of 2016 when our 2009 Honda Accord EX 2.4 liter 4 cylinder with 122,102 miles started using oil. In looking at my records I see that was when 5W20 synthetic oil was introduced to the car. I don't think using synthetic oil has anything to do with it. My Father ran a service station in Indiana from 1947-1988 and I grew up working around vehicles and was always taught to check my oil regularly and keep the oil changed every 3000 miles. Which I have always maintained with all of our vehicles over my adult life.

Once synthetic oil was introduced to the car in Jan. 2016 the mechanic says you only change every 5000-6000 mile. Well, in checking the oil regularly I have noticed the Honda using 3/4- 1/1/2 quarts of oil between oil changes. Again, I don't think the synthetic oil is the issue. We have never received any kind of notice from Honda about this issue about the VARIABLE CYLINDER MANAGEMENT VCM-----TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN---TSB #11-033. My mechanic is the one who just shared with us this information about the issues Honda has had with the burning of oil.

I will be contacting the dealer in Indianapolis, IN that sold us this 2009 Honda along with the 3 other Honda vehicles over our 38 years of marriage. I trust the dealer Ed Martin Honda will do something to support our case.

I wrote a complaint about my car breaking down in 2017. Supposedly had it repaired and light went on less than a month later. I was told it was the catalytic converter and as long as the car is working ok don't worry about it. 14,000 miles later, less than one year, it totally broke down again with the same thing. Now we are a hot potato and no one wants to touch the problem. Meanwhile Honda corp has not gotten back to us and our car is sitting at a Honda dealer totally disabled. The worst is right before this happened we purchased two used Honda's and one of them already broke down after driving it only 4 times. Not feeling very confident with Honda.

Update from Feb 20, 2018: The second car that I just purchased and used only 4 times is a used certified vehicle. The problem was rectified without cost to me. It needed a starter replacement. As far as the 2009 Honda Accord there has been no response from Honda Corp. It has been over a week.

Update from Mar 16, 2018: We were in contact with Honda for a month with a conclusion that they are not responsible. We feel they are because this was a problem with 2009 Honda Accords. When a repair was first done in 20017 at 112,00 miles by a Honda dealer in Vineland, we feel it was not done properly. After they repaired the car under the extended warranty and the engine light went on within two weeks later we were instructed to jiggle the gas cap and then if the light did not go off take it to a Honda dealer where we moved to. We did this and they plugged in their machine in which it showed the catalytic converter was the problem. We were told if the car was running ok then don't worry about it. 14,000 miles later the car breaks down due to excessive oil consumption. We took the car in for service every 3,000 miles and it went through inspection with light on. I just want to know how Honda came to the conclusion they are not responsible?

When we asked them to put it in writing they refused. They closed the case. Now we have a 2009 Honda sitting at the Honda dealer where we moved with no decision where to go with it. If I knew Honda cars would only make it to 112,000-126,000. I would never have purchased any. The only reason we purchased two additional used Honda's was because we felt they did good by us to pay part of the expense of the first break down. We purchased the two used vehicles one week before the second break down.

After we had it supposedly fixed at Honda in Vineland NJ we moved to Pennsylvania, less than a month my engine light went on. When I called the Honda mechanic in Vineland, NJ. He told me that there can be nothing wrong, not with the work he did. He told me to turn the gas cap. If that didn't work then take it to a Honda repair shop and check it out.

I went to the Honda repair shop in Pennsylvania. They plugged in a diagnosing tool and said it was the catalytic converter. I was told if the car was not giving me problems then don't worry about it. 14,000 miles later the car broke down with the same thing. Mechanic said it had excessive oil consumption and the engine is gone. We feel the job was not thoroughly done.

We contacted Honda corporate and are receiving an attitude. They told us they would contact us a within the week and have not heard from them. In the meantime our car is still at the Honda dealer sitting without and repair attempt. There has to be a "go to" person for this complaint.

We bought the car new in November of 2008. The problem started within a couple of months. Took it to a dealership about every year since the first problem occurred. They changed plugs, and updated the software each time. About a year ago (14,000 miles) they changed plugs and put in new piston rings. Tomorrow it goes infor new rings and plugs. There seems to be no fix just addressing symptoms of a bigger problem. This information is out enough that resale/trade in value has got to be greatly reduced. I think the solution is that Honda should buy the vehicles back at historical market price. I bought the vehicle because of historical reliability and value.

2009 Honda Accord EXL loaded, on full synthetic since new and burning excessive oil every 1000 miles, cannot even make it to regular oil change without adding oil. Honda dealership in State College, PA handled the claim through Honda and said it is normal for this car to lose a quart of oil every 1000 miles. This is after the brake fiasco I have also had to deal with and pay for with this car which Honda did not take full responsibility for. Now another problem that they will not back up.....MY LAST HONDA!!! Toyota service has been excellent....will spend my money with a car maker that knows the buyer is how they survive

First noticed in Jan 2016 that the engine light would come on for a split second while turning left or right. Couldn't make out what it was because it would not stay on for more than a split second. So started paying attention to the dashboard while turning and figured out it was engine oil light. Had the oil change done only 3 months ago at the dealer, so it was strange that the light would come on for a split second. Took the car to Honda dealer who found practically no oil left in the engine and mentioned that there is a recall for excessive oil consumption, including on 2009 Honda Accord.

So, there are 2 problems - 1) excessive oil consumption, and 2) faulty dashboard indicator for low oil.

Dealer asked to monitor oil consumption by manually checking the dipstick but I'm concerned that I'm still open to the risk of no oil in the engine between the dipstick checks which I'm doing so frequently (once a week at least). Shouldn't Honda just fix this problem?

I have taken this car into Honda several different times, to get fixed. They keep saying "Honda knows there is a problem but we don't know how to fix it, so we won't fix it. We are waiting on Honda to figure out how to fix it until then we can't do anything. I don't care how frustrated you are I can't fix it." It gets old to here this we bought this car from Honda, if they can't fix there problem, then they should not be making cars.

They said they need to do a consumption test, so every 500-800 miles I'm suppose to take my car back into them so they can put more oil in and they "understand" but they don't know where the oil is going. We asked if we could just trade it in and the response was " I don't trade in cars, I fix them." Well here is a thought he obviously can't fix the cars either. What are they waiting on for us to blow our motor and then us the owners to just be out of a vehicle because they sure aren't going to give us a new motor. No one wants to buy a car that has known issues, if we wanted to sell it.

I never know when I run out of oil. This car burns oil where is going? I get my scheduled oil changes I should have enough oil right? NO I have to always add a gallon of gas before. I use synthetic too. Thank God my husband has taught me not to be a dumb ass or else I would have burned up the engine. There should be a recall on this. I have done my research on this and it is a common problem with this year of Accords but no recall? I was about to replace the car and wanted to get a new Accord but I am looking at other cars because of this issue. I may be a Jeep Rubicon girl if I can drive it without hurting my neck. Such a shame I have ALWAYS been a Honda girl. Not no more.

I am the proud owner of a 2009 Honda Accord with the 2.4 engine and have the excessive oil consumption problem. I dropped it off at dealer today. After oil consumption tests, they are going to repair engine. Which is great, but when I asked service manager if he could explain to me why the car would be three quarts low on oil and the oil light never comes on, he told me that's the way it works. It only comes on when engine oil is down to 1 quart of oil.

I have been a mechanic for 38 years and find that a bit ridiculous. Why would any car company want you to run their engine with only one quart of oil and chance burning up a engine? Most all cars ever built the low oil light comes on at 1 quart low. I guess Honda had a lot of faith in their engines to design a system like that.

I find that not fair to the consumer to be able to keep his oil level at the proper level before total engine failure may occur. Not to mention cheap poor quality falling apart interiors. I think most people buy Honda for the same reason i have two of them they were known for quality and going forever but that is not the case nowadays.

MY 2009 Honda Accord really burns the engine oil. Every time when I change the oil (for every 3000 miles), I noticed the oil level would be very low. So I had to top up couple of times before the oil change to make sure it does not drop. But this time it was even worse - there wasn't any oil at the tip of the dip stick. I was shocked as it was only 3000 miles since my last oil change. It took one full quart to get the oil above the lower mark on the dip stick (it dropped from the upper limit in the dip stick to undetectable level in 3K miles). There was no leakage found during the vehicle inspection. It is really annoying to add oil every 1000 miles to prevent engine damage.

I heard a loud rattling sound under the hood...took it to the dealer...They checked out and said car was 3 quarts low on oil...oil was changed 2 months earlier...they filled and the noise went away. They suggested doing oil consumption tests every 1,000 miles for at least three times. Have taken it back twice since and the car has been 1 quart low each time. I got the dealer to change the oil again and they want us to bring the car back 3 more times for the oil consumption tests.

This is costing time and money but the dealer wants to document all this for Honda. Dealer stated that some cars with this problem eventually will have repairs for pistons, oil pumps and possibly complete engine overhaul. This problem will not get any better as time goes by. Oil consumption will increase as well as my expense and time putting up with this. This is not an isolated problem. Honda should address and fix. By the way, the recall for the software update was performed in 2012. Needless to say, it has not done any good.

With under 2k miles on 2009 Honda Accord, 4 cylinder engine, I noticed oil consumption issue. Dealer gave me the same response.....normal to use oil and to bring back for oil consumption test. Heard that story before. Next step was to do a computer upgrade which should help the problem. Vehicle has about 90k now and I must stay on top of the consumption between oil changes. Not something I have ever experienced with Honda and I've owned many Accords over the years. Not to mention the excessive cabin noise which Dealer attributes to tires. Not the reason.
