CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2009 Honda Accord has several serious defects – poor brakes, excessive oil consumption, & uncomfortable seats.

BRAKES: There was a class action lawsuit against Honda in 2010 for premature & excessive brake wear. See our page on Honda's brake problems for more info.

OIL CONSUMPTION: Honda issued a TSB about this in late 2011, claiming it could be fixed through a software update to the VCM (variable cylinder management). There are class action lawsuits pending. See our page about the Accord oil consumption.

UNCOMFORTABLE SEATS: Owners have consistently reported uncomfortable seats with the entire 8th generation (2008-2012) of Honda Accords. Complaints range from back pain to leg circulation problems due to bad lumbar support, cushioning, & seat angle. Complaints aren't limited to only a certain body type -- the seat comfort problems are from a wide spectrum of owner height & weight. The common theme we hear is "we never noticed this during the test drive." Unfortunately for unwary buyers, the seat pain is noticeable after 15-20 minutes.

The wife takes the Accord back to the dealer for a vibration when braking for the third time. They inform her that the rear brakes pads are wore out and it will be $219.95 to replace them. Now I'm really pissed! The service guy tells us that Honda has a problem with the brakes on Accords but will not do anything about it. He says that he get new Accords all the time with wore out brakes, but Honda will not acknowledge the problem. He gives me the number to American Honda, what a waste of time that was, all I got was lip service and a Claims number.

This is my first and last Honda product.

Bought a BRAND NEW 2009 Honda because I felt that they had a good reputation for being reliable vehicles with minimal problems. Took my vehicle in for a routine oil change and tire rotation/inspection and was told my rear brake pads were completely GONE. Bought the vehicle at POWAY HONDA and they don't seem to care that I have to now try to attempt to get reimbursed for this- not to mention paying for it up front and hoping that HONDA will reimburse me, but what about my time to write a letter and gather the info to send to them? As a consumer of a Honda vehicle, I believe they should have just RECALLED the damn brakes. If this many people are having problems, why make us do all the work while they get paid for the repairs? I don't get paid interest on the money I'm spending in the meantime. One word. RIDICULOUS.

Basically my breaks are squeaking and Honda is saying I will have to pay for the repairs,This is unbelievable! I do not have the money yet and hope I do not ruin the car more. Also, I have a friend who is a mechanic and is will to fix the breaks for $60.00 but I have this car on a lease and wonder if that will void anything incld the warranty... the squeaking is on a scale of 1-10, 10 being where the world turns and stares at your car, I am at about a 5...not sure on what to do either. I also think it is crap that they will only pay up to $150.00 when Honda charges well over $250.00 to replace these.

Near the end of January, my 2009 Accord with 14,000 miles sounded the brake warning squeal. Although it was too early for any brake pads to be worn down that much, I thought it must be the front brakes, but never imagined it could be the rear brakes. I never did find out which brakes were squealing, because less than a week later I got flipped over by a drunk driver and the car was totaled. I replaced the car with a 2010 Honda Accord, but I'm sorry I did after reading all these complaints. Should have gone for a Hyundai Sonata instead. The class action says the problem has been resolved on my new 2010 Accord. We shall see. As for the claim that INADEQUATE BRAKES do not represent a safety issue, I say tell it to the judge when the liability suits start to flow.

I am a first time Honda buyer. Purchased a 2009 Honda Accord and the rear brakes completely wore out after a year $28K miles. Dealership said this repair was not covered under warrenty but I may get a portion of the money I spent at some future point in time. It is very apparent to me that Honda, which I had had a good reputation have now started cutting corners with parts or engineering.

What was more frustrating was that Honda has a very difficult network in place to express complaints. I called the dealership and Honda Corp. for a fair resolution and they both washed thier hands of the problem.

I will never purchase another Honda again and am spreading the regarding my miserable experiance with Honda.

I bought my Accord for a normal 20K maintenance check and the dealer told me I need to replace my rear brake pads. I could not believe this would happen to a Honda made car. The dealer quoted $260 to replace the brake pad. I decided not to replace the pads for now. Instead, I parked my car in the garage and started e-mailing and calling Honda America, BBB, and NTSB. I will not pay $260 for a manufacturing defect until someone will pay for the cost.

Visited dealership for the maintenance service, and got the call while I was waiting that my rear brakes are completely worn down.

I complained how can the brakes worn down in such low mileage and the service manager first mentioned that my driving habit can cause that.

Knowing after searching the internet that 2009 Accords have brake problem, I mentioned about it, and manager suddenly tells me he will find what can he do to replace them for free, and next thing I know is that they replaced them free of charge.

I imagine I may had to pay for the replacement if I did not mention about my knowledge about brake problem with Accords. I guess knowing is money..

This is the second set of brakes that I have to replace on this car. I am really pissed, especially since the idiot at Garden state Honda in Passaic NJ tells me that Honda changed the way that their cars wear out the brakes. Are you kiddign me?!? Honda did this on purpose?? They changed the cars to wear out the rear brake faster than the front and at around every 9,000 miles? HA! What a JOKE!!! I probably would have had less problems if I would have bought a KIA!! Honda say good bye to a 12 yr loyal Honda customer.

This car is my 1st Honda. Been a Chevy & Ford man all my life. I cannot believe that the rear brake pads are already worn out. And this is apparently "normal". Can't believe it, I should have bought a Fusion instead. I bought a Honda for its reliability. It is good I am a mechanic, rather fix it myself than pay the dealer $275.00. What a disappointment!

I went to an independent mechanic to have my tires rotated and balanced. They told me that my rear brake pads were at 3mm and my front pads were 9mm. 3mm after 20k miles??? I contacted the dealer I purchased the vehicle from and scheduled a "brake inspection".

Long story short, I was informed by the dealer that there is a service bulletin out and they replaced the brake springs and sliding pin at no charge. However, since brake pads are a non-warranty item they would not cover the cost of the brake pads and wanted to charge me $350. After "discussing" the issue with them I was told that the would cover the cost minus a $125 warranty charge. I reluctantly gave in. My point was/is if the parts caused the excessive wear than the pads should be covered since I would not have needed pads if the parts were good...

This is my first and last Honda. We downgraded from a Acura TL and only leased this Accord after our TL lease was up. I guess this is what we get for trying to save a few bucks a month.

Accord EXL V6

I purchased my 2009 Accord as my family car that I thought I would be able to keep for a decade (per Consumer Reports' ranting and raving about the vehicle). A few months after I purchased the car (bought in February of 09), the brakes started squeeking. Knowing that some brake pads create more dust than others, I just hit the wheels with the hose every once in a while, and that solved the problem for a week or so.

Fast forward a little over a year and I bring my car into the dealership for it's 20,000 mile check-up. Everything checked out fine but the rear brakes that they tell me need replacing. I asked the service manager if he meant front brakes because with a front wheel drive vehicle, there is no way that back brakes can go in less than 20,000 miles. He informed me that this premature brake wear was definitely something that has been known to happen with the 08 and 09 Accords. Although, he also informed me that Honda calls this "known problem" a variable wear issue... and that he would offer me a coupon to get it done for the wonderful price of $200. Funny. I have done my own brakes on my own cars for a long time. You could buy a very good pair of rotors and pads and get them done yourself for a lot less money. I asked if I could speak to the manager, and was told that he was the manager. I literally couldn't fathom how the service manager told me about this issue, and didn't laugh when he said this was a common thing to happen to these cars, but that rear brakes going in under 20,000 miles is not considered a defect with the vehicle, thus not a warranty item.

I ended up calling HondaUSA, gave them the information, and the nice lady I spoke with ended up telling me that they are aware of the issue of the brake pads. Let me tell you that these people make no bones about the fact that they believe this is not a defect. BUT, she was very helpful and told me that as an act of good faith, Honda is offering assistance to people who experience this issue (provided you meet some sort of mileage or time requirement/limit).

I have yet to hear back from Honda... but thought this was good information for anyone else that has this same problem. Call HondaUSA, not your dealer. The dealer isn't incented in any way to help you with this issue. I think I'll be looking somewhere other than Honda when searching for my next vehicle.

I contacted the Manger at Honda and informed him of the problem that I had with my Rear brakes and he hen said that they where some problem with the Pads on the brakes, so he did offerto pay for up to $150.00 dollars for what i paid for. I then mentioned that I was concerned on why the rear brakes worn out that fast if the car is not even 1 year old. After emailing each other back and forth, I told him tat I had gotten other mechanics to look at the problem and ll told me that the Rear brakes do not wear that fas, that I need it to have the dealer take a look at it and see the problem. When I mentioned that to him he reply back telling me that the mechanis that I took my car to did not know what they where talking about, I then was furious, so I send him the link to all complaints on Honda Brakes and till this time he did not reply. I am driving to the Honda Dealer on my day off and I will deal with him directly, since he mentioned that They have the experts at The Honda and have more knowledge on Brakes. will see. But here is also part of the conversation that we had. Dealer response--Timothy wilson at The Mission Valley Honda --------------------------- There is nothing wrong with your car, we can take a look if you like, the problem was in the design of some of the brake pads, which has been corrected, this is why Honda will refund you the money, the car is fine just the brake pads themselves, coming in for an oil change we can make an inspection then.

Linda, as I stated I would look at the car if you would like us to, we are the professionals when it comes to the product itself, other mechanics are not on the forefront of new technology so when they tell you this is un-heard of or it should be the front brakes that wear first they are simply wrong, your car the back brakes always wear first since they are much smaller in size than the front. And yes we will address the key on Saturday as well as the oil change and inspection of the car

So it sure is interesting that they are the experts, but yet they still have issues... I am so disappointed with the purchase of the Car and their services.

I purchased my Honda in July 2009. I had a Dodge Durango and I traveled alot for my job. After everyone telling me how great Honda was and what a reliable car it was I decided to check them out. I went to the dealership and 2 days later was driving my new 09 accord coupe fully loaded except naviagtion. About a month later is when all the problems started. After owning the car for about a month or so I get in to go up to the store and as I close door I hear a loud crack. I was covered in glass because my sunroof has shattered all over me. Upon looking at the sunroof I noticed that when it closed it had closed under the roof (so apparently the tracks were mis aligned) but no this wasnt good for Honda they assumed I put my hand through or punched it or something. After arguing I got my sunroof replaced.

Now onto my brakes they have been replaces 3 times now and I do all highway driving! The first time i brought it in for brakes they asked me if I have ever had any sudden panic stops and I said yeah and they said oh well that could of caused it. So i asked him if everytime I have a panic stop is this going to happen and he said no. I asked if anyone else had complained about the same problem and he told me no. Well yet again it goes in for the second time and they have to cut my rotors once again I ask has anyone else complained and he tells me no now we are on the 3rd time brakes squeak they feel like crap brak pedal feels mushy now its my rear brakes again this time I say this is nuts its a brand new car the guy tells me they came out with a brand new rear brake kit because people were complaining about this issue. I said why didnt you tell me that the first 2 times I brought it in and I just got a dumb founded look like I was talking to a elementary school student.

Ahhh so now everything should be fine! RIGHT? Nope brakes still squeal feel like crap and they tell me the squeal is normal all brakes squeal i told him they are full of shi*. So I contacted an attorney and he tells me the lemon law doesnt apply to me because im over 18,000 miles and the problem has to occur 4 times and im only up to 3 times. Ok so you would think thats all right? Nope now my check engine light is on and I have to bring it back again. I give up im ready to trade it in for Maxima. Maybe Honda was great years ago however now they SUCK!

Update from Jun 28, 2010: 6/28/2010-- So i bring the car in for the check engine light and they tell me I have 3 cylinders misfiring 5 days later I get a call and they tell me coil packs and spark plugs were checked and the problem was the computer. They told me they updated the programming and everything is fine. WELL i pick it up and leave and what do you know 2 hours later check engine light is on again. I WANT MY MONEY BACK!! If anyone knows any good attorneys on Long Island please email me JGRA80@aol.com. Thanks

Update from Jan 5, 2012: After bring the car in for the 4th time for the check engine light they determined the engine was misfiring, they kept my car for a month and half and had engineers from ohio and california come out to check the car because they couldn't figure out the issue. The solution was to put a brand new engine in my brand new car. I hired attorney and took them to court and they refused to buy it back saying i didn't have enough problems with car, but to restore my faith in there product they would give me 4 grand. I took the money of course but i still have no faith in there product!

Same as so many other brake problems described here. Only 28,000 miles. Service guy tried to tell me that the annoying grinding noise was part of an intentional warning system designed for the car's brake system. Management finally backed off and replaced the pads with 'better' pads-for free. But they told me that a better caliper could not be installed because one has not been designed and manufactured, .......yet.

premature brake wear

just to give everyone a heads up, there's an update to this rear accord brake concern. v-springs are installed to the rear brake pads during replacement. also, the two caliper pins on the caliper brackets are likely to have been installed backwards.. so they need to be inspected, regreased, and rotated if they were. there are detailed instructions that come with a new box of brake pads. interestingly enough, honda has not published any technical service bulletins regarding this issue.

Just reading other complaints about this problem by other Honda owners. Took my car to dealership in Macon, GA today. Service representative knew problem immediately when I described the noise coming from my car. Sounded like something rattling in the trunk making an awful noise. Told him if I had hubcaps I would think there were rocks. He told me Honda had issued a repair notice and the problem would take about an hour and a half to fix at NO cost to me. A spring of some sort causes premature wearing of the brake pads. No recall but so glad I took my car in! I have the best Honda dealership in the world.
