CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2008 Honda Accord has several serious defects: poor brakes, excessive oil consumption, & uncomfortable seats.

BRAKES: There was a class action lawsuit against Honda in 2010 for premature & excessive brake wear. See our page on Honda's brake problems for more info.

OIL CONSUMPTION: Honda issued a TSB about this in late 2011, claiming it could be fixed through a software update to the VCM (variable cylinder management). There are class action lawsuits pending. See our page about the Accord oil consumption.

UNCOMFORTABLE SEATS: Owners have consistently reported uncomfortable seats with the entire 8th generation (2008-2012) of Honda Accords. Complaints range from back pain to leg circulation problems due to bad lumbar support, cushioning, & seat angle. Complaints aren't limited to only a certain body type -- the seat comfort problems are from a wide spectrum of owner height & weight. The common theme we hear is "we never noticed this during the test drive." Unfortunately for unwary buyers, the seat pain is noticeable after 15-20 minutes.

I bought my 2008 Honda Accord EX-L (4cyl) and first off the bat there were two issues: my front bearing was defective and the brakes issue that eventually got resolved. Then after about 70,000 miles I noticed my Oil Light coming on and off, at first I wanted to blame the Service guys for not putting enough oil in but now I understand that the issue is with excessive oil consumption. I now have 109,000 on it and recently had to add two quarts of oil, which is unheard of in 2008 cars. Now I have the same bearing issue and and the car stutters a bit when I try to accelerate and sometimes it sounds like it may just stall after coming to a stop. I thought the issue with the oil consumption was one of kind but reading through this forum and others it seems like this is a wide spread issue in 2008 models. I'm glad someone is doing something about because this is ridiculous. I'm not sure if I want to fix it or sell it, will find out after I bring it to Honda for Service. This is my third Honda and I'm very disappointed and now not sure if I want to buy another one. Hope this gets resolved quickly before I have to put any of my money into this.

After having a Civic that lasted what seemed like an eternity and having 4 other Hondas in the family I thought buying my Accord coupe was going to be a safe and sound bet. Boy was I wrong. This particular year/model has had so many problems! First my brakes wore prematurely but that is a different complaint altogether so I wont go into that here. Now the current problem is the ridiculously insane amount of oil this car burns. Before I realized what was going on I must have driven at least 300 miles on almost an empty tank! Who knows what damage this could have caused. I went to the dealership and they want me to do an "Oil Consumption Test" which I'm sure they'll come back and say this is absolutely normal, which is totally wrong. I didn't have time nor did I want to bother with such lack of customer service. It has gotten to the point to where I'm purchasing the biggest bottle of oil I can find at the local store and filling the oil up myself. This is ridiculous and Honda will not fix their mistake... We'll see if I ever buy a Honda again. They've lost tons of customers due to this I'm sure. I don't blame a single one. Shame on Honda.

Have owned Hondas my whole life with two in the driveway now. (Pilot, Accord) Have been a huge Honda advocate telling friends my love for the reliability of Honda's. I drive mega miles for my job and love the feeling of starting the car and having no problems Bought the Honda accord 2008 with 47000 miles on the car and started on my way feeling secure the car would get me over 200,000 miles like all the other Hondas I have owned. After the second month my oil light went on. Checked the dip stick and there was no oil on the stick. Went through the steps of oil checks every 1000 miles. Was told its normal for the car to burn a quart of oil every 1000 miles. That really upset me and after numerous calls they agreed to replace rings and other parts that I do not remember their names. Well thought I was all set until I went back to driving the car like a normal honda and only check the levels when I bring in for oil change. Well again I had no oil on the stick. Back to the oil checks again INSTEAD OF FIXING THE PROBLEM. I live 30 miles from the dealership and bring this car back is a pain to say the least. I hope Honda tech sees the light and takes care of their customers that have been loyal to them over the years. Just bought my daughter a car a Toyota which looks just as nice as a Honda in the driveway.

Had the software fix applied to the Accord back in October. I don't know if it has been since then, but I have been told by the dealer that I need to check the oil every 1,000 miles and add a quart of oil or about that. I have never had to do this before. I have taken it into the dealership before with the same issue and they simply said it was low then.

Anyways, I still feel like there is something wrong with the car now. Where as when I first go the car, I could go the entire time until the oil sensor said 15% to take it in. Now at 80% the car's oil light comes on and it makes raving noises.

Guess, I'll be checking my oil myself. Which is definitely no something I want or think I should be needing to do.

My car has under gone the oil consumption test now for many months off and on. They claim it is fine for it to need oil added every 1000 miles, even though you don't even get a warning light. You can hear a grinding kind of noise is how you know it needs oil. Or just set to check and add it every 1000 miles because you are going to need too. This is unacceptable and completely a pain. Corporate does nothing, you report a claim, they have your local dealership start the test, which is a pain because you have to go by every 1000 miles taking time away from your schedule. They document and top off the oil, only to come back and say we don't see any issues with this. Really..... I have driven Honda's since 1992, loved them because my car was always reliable and I didn't have any issues with it. I finally decided to sell my 1992 Accord for the 2008 and had nothing but issues. Honda needs to step up and take care of all these customers. We have been loyal Honda customers and this is how we are repaid, and you know good and well it's a problem because their are many of us, along with a Class Action Lawsuit. Honda has replaced only some motors, what about the rest of us....You need to make it right with each and every one of us. Word of mouth is very powerful and if this continues it's not looking so good for Honda in the future...

Started about a year ago to notice a grinding noise in second gear, turned out to be about 2 quarts low oil. Consuming more oil every month, just had oil change 900 miles ago and indicator is at 90% and already a quart low. They said that is normal! Now they want to start the oil consumption test which will take months to complete. They should just fix the car now. I bought this car assuming it would be relatively maintenance free. This is riidiculous. The 2008 accord i4 is obviously a problem.

Update from Feb 23, 2013: just had pistons and rings replaced after oil consumption test. had to keep on them to fix the problem, but talking to corporate seemed to help. we will see if this is the fix!

Honda owner since 1989... sad to read and identify with so many of the complaints listed here with the same problem. Honda has had my loyalty and been my preference for quality and longevity...their decision of non-responsibility in this, compared to their past track record, has ended their status with me. I can't believe Honda thinks this business decision--save money-at cost of lost customers, re-buyers, loss of $$ made from routine customer service work, and damage to reputation--was strategically correct. About to take the steps to address this problem that can't be ignored...too much of a risk of engine damage.

FACT: This problem is a direct result of error from the Honda engineering and production teams. After Honda discovered the problem there should had been a recall and they should had financed all repairs and apologize for inconvenience suffered by the customer. Even now proof is still poring in telling them of our plight and that this is something that is NOT fixed by a software (firmware) update.

Honda persists denying help to their loyal customer "Me". Unless they right their wrong, I now will forever understand and speak of Honda as a Thief and holder of Lies. I pray greed will not win and we will be once again please with Honda vehicles.Until then shame on you and shame on your work ethic.

My car is consuming oil. I have to put in quarts of oil in between oil changes or the low oil light will come on. The dealership oil monitoring test show the oil consumption rate is 1 quart every 1732 miles (it consumed 1 quart in first 1000 miles and then nothing in next 732 miles). My oil monitoring test is showing 1 quart every 1200 mile. Honda America says this is normal and will not approve the dealership to do any further diagnostic test. My car is still under warranty but the warranty will expire in a few months.

I wanted to add my complaint to the list about the 2008 Honda Accord. I bought it in March 2012 and by June the oil was gone out of the car. I didn't get any warning lights about the oil being low. So, I took the car in for that and a oil change. They did the oil change and the TSB update which they said would fix the problem. Now, here in September I get the loud sound when I crank up. I knew that meant there was no oil in the car. Sure enough there wasn't. I'm going to get the oil change and start on the engine oil consumption test. I haven't even had the car 6 months. I bought a Honda because of its reputation but this is crazy.

I just wanted to add my complaint about my Honda 2008 EX-L V4 burning oil like everyone else states. Dealer recently did an oil consumption test and it was burning 1 quart every 1,000 miles. I have an extended warranty but they want me to pay for a 900 dollar engine tear down before they will consider fixing the problem. This started around 80,000 miles and has gotten worse over time - currently 123,000 miles. I am not sure what else to do - I am hoping the warranty covers it or the class action lawsuit goes through.

I too have a Honda Accord that is burning an excess amount of oil between oil changes and Honda is playing it down

I started a consumption test two weeks ago and i am down 0.3l after two week or 2500km/1560miles, This is monitored by some service desk person that waited 20 minutes for my car to cool down and then he looks at the dip stick. This is going to be a very large $ if i have to fix after the warranty, yet Honda Canada knows that this problem exists. I am not sure why they do not do a compression test immediately on all 2008 Honda Accords to determine that the rings are failing

The Warranty recall must first go thru a consumption test before Honda will look at changing out the rings to fix the problem. My complaint is this is in the hands of a SERVICE DESK PERSON looking at a dip stick to determine the amount of oil used

DOES this seem right; no

I am not sure what a Piston Ring replacement job costs. but if Honda wants repeat business then they better take care of their existing customers. The dealer thinks there is no issue but when my oil light comes on between changes then there is definitely a issue.

I have always serviced by Accord at Penske Honda. I had them change the oil at 51,000 miles. At 55,000 miles the "wrench" say my oil was at 50%. I heard chattering in the engine area and took it to Penske Honda in Indianapolis. They told me that I was 2 1/2 quarts low of engine oil. They told me that it was within Honda specs if I "only" needed one quart of oil per 1,000 miles! REALLY? I sold the car that day! I will never have another Honda!

Like everyone, I bought a fairly new Honda thinking I was getting a pretty reliable car but boy was I wrong. I initially learn of the oil consumption problem when my car started making a grinding noise. It progressively got worse and so I checked the oil. Not a drop of oil in sight. Had the oil changed then the check engine light came on. Code came back as a camshaft position sensor. Got that replaced so that was a waste of about 300 bucks.

Went to the Honda dealership and asked about any recalls. Like everyone else, all the recalls were done and was told the software update was to prevent the car from consuming too much oil. That hasn't and isn't gonna work. I fought with Honda for about 2 weeks and like everyone else, they wouldn't take ownership. I decide I would fix the the problem myself after they ran test and told me what it was. Actually they thought they knew. I've had the camshaft sensors, tensioner, and chain replaced and the car still won't run right.

As soon as I do figure out the problem, I will never ever buy a Honda.

Accord EX 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission

I have been a faithful Honda buyer for years now. I've had 3 Honda/1 Acura cars prior. I currently own this Accord, a Honda Shadow motorcycle, a Honda fit I just purchased less than a month ago, and even a Honda branded lawn mower. I've given them a good chunk of my income.

About 6 months ago, I noticed the low oil light was coming on whenever I hit the brake. I took it into my service center and was basically told I was overdue for an oil change even though the maintenance minder showed I still had 40% oil life left. I let them change it and in less than 3000 miles, the light was coming up again. I checked the dip stick and no oil at all was shown. After another oil "change" I was told I needed to do a consumption test so I did that. The day before my last consumption check-in, I looked at the dip stick and saw that there was no level again. I called the service center and was told to add a quart and bring it in the next day. Upon arrival I was told that since I added oil, it voided the whole consumption test and would have to start over.

So I just finished the last check of THIS consumption test and was told that I've been losing a quart of oil every 1000 miles on average. I was told by my service rep that Honda deems this acceptable. Now, I have no complaints about my service rep - she has been nothing but helpful, but the way she worded this screamed of a scripted response.

No, 1 quart of oil going into the engine is not acceptable on a 20 year old vehicle, let alone one less than 4 years old built by what USED to be the most reliable engine manufacturer in the world.

I have a case pending with their consumer complaint dept. but I have little to no hope of any kind of resolution (maybe they will surprise me). It hurts when a brand that you have invested this much money and support into lets you down. If I had known this would be their response a month ago, I never would have bought the Honda Fit for my wife. I have to tell two of my aunts that I talked into buying Accords that this could be a problem for them to look forward to, as well.

Accord EX In-Line 4-cyl

At around 66k miles, my oil light came on for the first time ever. I took it to the dealer. They said my oil was quite low, but my rings and engine block were fine. They acted perplexed, updated the software (but they weren't very hopeful about that making a difference) and asked that I do a consumption test. At the first 1,000 mile mark of the test, I took it in and they said there was no change in the oil level. They made it sound as if the drop in oil level had just been a fluke. So, I just chalked it up to a fluke. At around 69,000 miles, it happened again. Once again, they've started me on a consumption test. At my first 1,000 mile check, they said I was down 10 oz. I'll go back again at 2,000 miles here soon.

I'm very concerned that this could wind up being an expensive repair if they don't solve this soon. I'm not sure what to do next, other than continuing with these consumption tests.

They also told me that consuming up to 1 qt every 1,000 miles is "within spec". That sounds way off to me.
