CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2008 Honda Accord has several serious defects: poor brakes, excessive oil consumption, & uncomfortable seats.

BRAKES: There was a class action lawsuit against Honda in 2010 for premature & excessive brake wear. See our page on Honda's brake problems for more info.

OIL CONSUMPTION: Honda issued a TSB about this in late 2011, claiming it could be fixed through a software update to the VCM (variable cylinder management). There are class action lawsuits pending. See our page about the Accord oil consumption.

UNCOMFORTABLE SEATS: Owners have consistently reported uncomfortable seats with the entire 8th generation (2008-2012) of Honda Accords. Complaints range from back pain to leg circulation problems due to bad lumbar support, cushioning, & seat angle. Complaints aren't limited to only a certain body type -- the seat comfort problems are from a wide spectrum of owner height & weight. The common theme we hear is "we never noticed this during the test drive." Unfortunately for unwary buyers, the seat pain is noticeable after 15-20 minutes.

I have had the same squeaking noise for the past 14 months since I purchased the car. I took the car to 4 different dealers to see about the problem. I called the Honda Helpline twice and I got a poor response from them each time. A few of the dealers said the brakes are glazed which was caused by applying the brakes too softly. Others have said that I was having the problem because I was applying the brakes too hard. Now I am out of the brake warranty and the problem has not been solved. This has been a poor design by Honda.

I'm sitting @ the Honda dealer as I'm typing this complaint and they're in the middle of fixing my car under warranty. My car has 33K miles on it that are 90% highway miles and I'm down to 5% brake pad life in the right rear pad. This was caught due to a high pitched squeak when I was backing up. You've got to be kidding me!!

I had my worries when I had to replace my transmission in my 2004 Honda accord @ 65,000 Miles. Where has the quality gone w/ Honda? I told my service guy that I appreciated him fixing this under warranty but voiced my heavy concerns about this no doubt occurring again. He dodged the question and answered like he was running for political office!!

Anyone considering a Honda Accord, be careful and think again. Do your due diligence and check out previous year problems before buying. I also have concerns and gripes about the new 2008 design. The following are real issues: 1) Driver windshield wiper only covers about 75% of a wipe in rain storm due to lousy design of windshield. Focused on design vs. function. 2) Leather seats are TOOOOOO hard and never seem to soften up. My ass hurts constantly! 3) With the extension of the wheelbase, they moved the center post on the car forward so when your seat is pushed all the way back (like me w/ long legs), it nearly impossible getting out of the car w/o turning sideways due to this post being right in your way. Poor design! 4) They've put the ECO transmission in the V6 model out of their Odyssey. Let me tell you, @ 62 MPH, this car is constantly "seeking" a speed to settle in for max MPG efficiency. Very frustrating and no doubt will cause a premature failure of something.

Bottom line, I'll consider a Nissan next time. Toyota Avalons are great cars a bit too pricey and none of them come prepped w/ XM radio unless you want to pay an additional $700 for the package to be dealer installed into the dash. No Way!! The equivalent Toyota Avalon last year was $4K higher than I bought the Honda Accord for. I know, quit whining right? Brakes failing at 33K highway miles? No way. If you look, that's the # 1 complaint with these new 2008 Accords!!

Probably Nissan next time!! A VERY frustrated dissatisfied Honda owner. Jim

Both me and my sister purchased a 2008 Honda Accord on last year. Our brakes started squeaking around the same time in December. Took the car to the dealership numerous times, and they said there was nothing they could do. They said it could be the weather causing the problems, but even in warm temperature the brakes still squeak. I would advise everyone that can to call the Honda Corporate offices at 800-999-1009, and voice your complaint to them. I believe that many complaints could probably fix the solution, and they will do a recall on these brakes. Something needs to done! This is not our fault, and should not have to pay for something that was there before we purchased the car!!

I have an 08 accord and it also squeaks when I slow down. The techs at one dealership told me that it was typical because of the new material that was being used for the brake pads....I am sure Honda will eventually fix the problem, but for now it is very annoying to come to a stop and have people looking like " He needs to get his brakes fixed."

squeaky brakes

Bought it in Feb of '08 my first new car I was so HAPPY! I still am. But the brakes make the worst noise. This started around dec of '08 at about 12,300 miles. After a few stops (once it warms up) the noise goes away. I called my dealership (Gillman Honda /San Antonio TX) They told me that they were looking into the problem and to call back every few days until they get a fix.

Seems like a lot of people have this same issue. After owning the car for about three months, the brakes started to squeal on my Coupe while softly applying the brakes. I took the car to the dealership. They told me they couldn't reproduce the squeal. I picked up the car, and on my way home the brakes squealed, so I went back to the dealership and got the technician to go for a ride. He said he always hits the brakes harder, and kind of indicated I drove like an old lady for not stomping on the brakes. After reluctantly replacing the pads, the technician admitted he had a half-dozen other customers w/ the same problem. About a month later, the brakes started to squall again w/ the new pads. I called Honda cars customer service to see if they could offer any guidance. The customer service rep told me to go to another dealer. A second dealer gave a song-and-dance about ceramic pads and rusty rotors. The later technician told me I wasn't driving the car often enough to wear off the rust build-up on the rotors! I drive 40 miles every day, and have put 10,500 miles on the car in seven months. This problem is soooo annoying... At least it's winter and my windows are "up" most of the time, so I can't hear the squeal. If anyone knows of a solution, please respond!!!

Accord EX NAV 4 cyl

After Honda replaced a defective bearing which thankfully works great, the brakes started squealing. This happens every time the car has been sitting for 2 or more hours, doesn't matter on the Temperature or Humidity as they mentioned in Honda's FAQ's (http://automobiles.honda.com/information/frequently-asked-questions.aspx?Question=6) and doesn't matter on weather conditions. After numerous shop visits they replaced our rear and front brake pads and resurfaced the rotors but the problem didn't go away, and they told us that the brake noise is normal, well I surely don't think so!!! We've owned 3 other Hondas and never had a problem like this. They don't know how to fix the problem so they are saying that it's normal. Well, a brand new car should make ANY noises except when the brake pads are wearing thin, I mean this is a load of crap. Other car makers make their brake systems work without squealing and Honda should work on a new brake design and recall / replace all the cars with squealing brakes and replace them with a new system that doesn't SQUEEEAAALL!!! This is unacceptable that the noise is normal, Honda needs to do something about this and not just say "sorry", Sorry - does not work for us!!! We're ready to just trade the car for a different car maker, which cars don't have Squealing brakes.

I have taken my car in to have the brakes repaired several different times for brake noise. The first time was in January 08. I was told they were fine and no problem. I took it back in February 08 at 3 different times before they finally replaced the rotors and pads. But now I am having the same problem again. My question is how many times should I have to have my BRAND NEW CAR in the shop. This is getting more than a little out of hand. Can someone say RECALL...

BIGGEST MISTAKE! I really look up to the quality of Honda (until now!). That's why I bought my new 2008 Honda Accord. Worst decision I've made :( Few months I've been driving the car, breaks started squealing. Since it's still under warranty, they took it in. First they changed the front discs and resurface the rotor. Then same problem occurs. Brought it back in, this time they changed the rear discs and resurfaced the rotor. I'm not a mechanic, but doesn't this shorten the span of the brake life? Well, to make the long story short, same problem still exist! I called Honda Customer Service and spoke directly with the Regional Manager. Explained the whole situation and all I get is "sorry". He said it is NOT a safety issue and the car is operational and there is nothing else they can do. Except for me to bring it back in and they could take a look at it. And then what??? He even said that it's typical for some cars for their breaks to squeal. Hmmm, even a fifth grader would know, not on a new car!!! Maybe if it was a used car, I would understand and accept the situation. But I bought a new car!!! Instead of enjoying my new car, I feel MISERABLE everyday when I drive it. It's a BIG TURN OFF and aggravating whenever I step on those brakes. All I am asking is for them to change the whole brakes or maybe even change my car (yeah right!). The main reason why I finally bought a new car is so I don't have to encounter any problems (not just yet!). I even bought the extended warranty because I don't want to deal with car problems (not just yet!). Honestly, I love my car but I don't want it anymore! Take it back please! For you out there who's thinking of getting a Honda car, think twice or even 3 times! They are not as helpful as what we think they are. You would think they keep up with their name, Honda.....NOT! It's sad, but it's true. I may be one of a million who is unfortunate to get a LEMON, but I speak the truth. I am very sad and disappointed. When I get a chance, and can afford it, I will trade-in my car. I read all complaints written here, and we are all on the same boat. If anyone out there has a solution or know something, please, please let me know!

Accord EX 2.4L 4 cyl

  • 200 miles

The squeaky brake problem on my 2008 Accord started almost as soon as I got 100 mile on the car. I thought it may just need a little more break in period but instead of getting better it got worse. The car has been brought back 3 times since it was purchased in May for this problem. The first time they didn't hear the squeak but changed the rear rotors and pads because there were some "hot spots on the rotors". The second trip in for this problem and the mechanics still can't hear the squeak but they "resurfaced" the rotors anyway. Finally on trip #3, I convinced the service writer to let me take technician for a ride so I could show him how the brakes squeak under light pressure. He finally admitted hearing the noise and they brought the district manager in to advise them what should be done. Two days later they called me to come and pick up the car and told me they had 4 people drive the car and no one could hear the noise!!! HOWEVER, they also said "Honda recognizes there is a problem with brake squeak but there is no solution at this time.". I'm not buying it but I can't seem to get any support or a phone number for a Honda rep from the dealership so I can confirm this is a known problem and EVERY 2008 Accord squeals like a new born pig.

So, I buy this brand new beautiful car in Late February. I live in Phoenix and so as you can imagine our Februaries are pretty nice. No crazy snow or rain, just decent weather. Well, about three weeks after I get my wonderful new car I start noticing this squeak sometimes. I, having purchased Hondas before thought, "there is no way that I am the squeaky car." Wrong! So, I dealt with the occasional brake squeak, hoping that it might go away. Wrong again!. Finally in June, and around only 5,000 miles, I went to the dealership to see if there was anything that they could do. First they said that they couldn't hear what I was talking about, but when they realized that I was not falling for their attempt at making me feel like I was suffering from some sort af brake-squeak psychosis, they finally admitted that there was a squeak and they replaced my rotors. So, you'd think that the problem would have been solved, Wrong yet again!. About a thousand miles later the squeak came back. I waited again to get it checked out still hoping that my faith in Honda quality would not let me down, but the squeaking persisted and in October I finally went back to the dealership. This time they hear the noise and "cleaned up" what they are calling a "glaze" that builds up on my brakes, causing the squeak. When they called to tell me that my car was ready they had the manager call and tell me that the glaze was a product of my driving and that essentially I was causing with my safe driving. They then proceeded to tell me that to solve my problem I should slam on my brakes occasionally to break up the glaze on my brakes. On the drive home I heard the squeak yet again. In the end, not only am I to blame for the constant brake squeak but it also appears as thought they are either unable or unwilling to fix the squeak, and I am now the sucker driving too safely down the road in a squeaky car paying $450.00 a month to do so.

My brakes started squealing from the beginning. I reported it at the 100Km service (they said they took care of it), then at the 1000 km service (oh we cleaned the pads), then at the 5000 Km, and here I demanded a solution. Accord EX 4 cyl

Right from the beginning, my brakes squeak virtually every time I push down on the pedal. I figured maybe they just needed to break in, but at almost 2000 miles they still squeak so I brought it back to the dealer. Naturally, they didn't squeak when the mechanic drove it. I have to go back for them to fix a speaker, so the Service Manager says the mechanic will ride with me that day so I can point out what sound I am referring to. It is loud enough for me to hear with the windows closed and the stereo on.

Update from Aug 5, 2009: Update: At about 2500 miles, the car went back in to have the speaker fixed, and I asked them to have the mechanic test drive it to listen for the squeak. They did not have me ride along with him, but did put in new rear brakes without me even asking, so apparently they realized that this was not normal. Apparently, that did the trick because the squeaking stopped.

However, now I am at 6700 miles (yes, I know, low mileage, all local driving) and the squeaking started again this week. It happens at slow speeds, such as when inching forward at a stoplight. It has been humid here this week, so I'm hoping that is all it is.
