CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Honda Accord suffers from transmission failure. It's not a huge widesperad problem like in prior years, but definitely still something to consider.
The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 90,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.
Transmission failure problems have been a huge problem for the Accord & several other Honda models all through the early 2000s model years. Honda eventually extended the transmission warranty to 93 months/109k miles for the 2000-2001 Accords as a class action lawsuit settlement, but owners of other Accord model years with transmission problems are out of luck.

I had been noticing that my car seemed to be idling high a lot and seemed to "jump" into gear for about a week or so but on a trip to the airport with my handicapped mother and 3 year old daughter in the car, it was idling extremely high. Since we were in stop and go traffic, when I would take my foot off the gas, it would seem to launch and was making me nervous so during one of "stop" times, I put the car in park to tap the gas and try to get the engine to stop racing. The gear shift froze up and I was unable to get it into any gear. Worse yet, I couldn't remove the key! We were in the freeway entrance and people were literally getting irate when they passed by. I was 5 months pregnant at the time which seemed to make matters worse. After several nice people stopped and tried to help, I finally had to call 911 and have a police officer assist us. He was finally able to get the car in gear ( I don't know what he did) but he told me not to put the car in park until I reached my final destination. The very next day I took the car to my local Honda dealer and, after they kept my car all day, the mechanic told me that they were unable to duplicate the problem and after inspecting the vehicle they could not locate any problems so they performed a "computer update" and sent me on my way. I didn't feel completely safe but had hope that maybe that's all it needed.
Now this weekend, almost a year to the date, the same thing happened. Again with my handicapped mother, my 4 year old daughter and my 9 month old son. This time I could remove the key but we were stranded for a good 30 minutes in 100+ weather. Not exactly what I would expect from a 5 year old car that cost me $25k new. I haven't spoke with Honda Customer Service Department yet and they may handle it in a professional manner, but I seriously have my doubts after reading other complaints from customers who had far less miles on their car (I'm sitting at 38,957k) and much newer (one customer had only had their car for 24 months). As another customer had mentioned, I do spend more for Hondas ( this is my 4th), but do so to avoid problems like this. We're in no financial situation to be replacing this car but I will not and can not own a car that is unreliable. Depending on how Honda handles this issue, this may be the last Honda I own!
