CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Honda Accord suffers from transmission failure. It's not a huge widesperad problem like in prior years, but definitely still something to consider.
The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 90,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.
Transmission failure problems have been a huge problem for the Accord & several other Honda models all through the early 2000s model years. Honda eventually extended the transmission warranty to 93 months/109k miles for the 2000-2001 Accords as a class action lawsuit settlement, but owners of other Accord model years with transmission problems are out of luck.

My V6 Accord lost all speed and the tachometer went up to 6000 rpms all of a sudden. I had a lot of traffic behind me and had I not been on a downhill slope I could never have pulled over in time. Downshifting to Third got me a ways further, but again lost speed and the engine revved to 6k rpms. On the third attempt to make forward progress I had to stop as the traffic was fast approaching behind me and I would have caused a huge pile-up. I had to pull into the breakdown lane with my emergency flashers on and wait for a tow truck.
Advice: Buy a Honda re-manufactured transmission with a warranty, do not buy a used transmission no matter how low the mileage. Mine went at 103,000 miles, but I see that most went at much lower mileage. Honda Customer Care gave me so little care it was ridiculous. A mechanic I know well who has worked on Honda's for over 35 years told me all Honda automatic transmissions from 1999-2006 are trash. Honda itself will not tell you that, or even come close to admitting it. Through 2004 Accord automatics were recalled...all of them. There was an extended warranty for 2005 automatic transmissions in the Accord but it expired in Sept. 2012 and I am told it was VIN specific and my VIN was not included. I owned the car then and was never notified, but obviously I should have been.
I've owned Honda's since 1979, but Honda could have cared less. Report any problems to the National Highway Transportation Safety Admin. Please. It might help.
