CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Honda Accord suffers from transmission failure. It's not a huge widesperad problem like in prior years, but definitely still something to consider.
The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 90,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.
Transmission failure problems have been a huge problem for the Accord & several other Honda models all through the early 2000s model years. Honda eventually extended the transmission warranty to 93 months/109k miles for the 2000-2001 Accords as a class action lawsuit settlement, but owners of other Accord model years with transmission problems are out of luck.
Nature of problem. When driving at speeds over 40 mph and after the car had warmed up after approx 10 miles or more of running in overdrive (tach around 2000 -2500): While running with constant pressure on the accelerator (holding it in one position) speed would drop off (approx 200 to 300 rpms) for ½ to 2 seconds and then return to previous speed (rpms). Similar to when a manual transmission is shifted when motor speed is not correct and gears clash.
Happens most often on slight grades of 2 to 5%. As car goes over the top of a slight hill and starts down, hesitation occurs one to three times and then when starting up a slight hill from the bottom it usually happens again. Also happens less often on level road when maintaining a constant speed. Tapping the accelerator usually stops the immediate problem. The fault seems temperature sensitive since it would take longer to start doing this in cold weather.
Feb 4 returned Accord for service on speed interruption problem. Had to leave car to next day as service took computer readings to analyze problem. Said incorrect voltages at TPS indicated.
Only time will tell whether the problem is actually fixed.
Too much cost to fix a simple problem.
Second trans fluid change after 5,000 miles. $ 78.40
Excessive cost to replace TPS since it is included on a larger part assembly
Throttle body pt# 16400-RAA-A63 $ 394.25
Plus labor $ 226.48.
Total to fix (?) problem: $ 699.13
A separate TPS would cost less then $150 including labor and Honda mark up.
