CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, & problems with the airbag system (SRS). We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.
The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 90,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000. Transmission failure has been a huge problem for the Accord & several other Honda models all through the early 2000s model years. Honda extended the transmission warranty to 93 months/109k miles for the 2000-2001 Accord as a class action lawsuit settlement, but owners of other Accord model years with transmission problems are out of luck.
Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.
The SRS warning light likes to come on due to a defective seat belt sensor -- typically the driver's side. This sensor is covered under Honda's lifetime seat belt warranty, but some dealers charge a $100+ "diagnostic fee" or tell customers the entire SRS unit ($800) is bad.

This car was initially my brother's. I helped him get the first transmission replaced for free when the car had 21,000 miles. Even before that, the paint on the driver's side roof channel began to peel. I wasn't sure whether this was caused by my brother's lack of care, however when I inherited the car a couple of years ago I began to see early 2000 series White Accord Sedans with peeling paint in the same area. There is definitely a manufacturing process problem at Honda's assembly plant in Mexico. (VIN code: 3; I looked at the VINs of the other cars with this paint problem. The body has scrapes and dings so I didn't feel justified in complaining, however now in hindsight, I should have said something earlier. Because the body isn't in the greatest condition, I will prime and paint the car myself. NOTE: White Accords do NOT have a clear coat; it's only paint. This car has been quite problematic for both my brother and myself but I will drive it until the next transmission replacement comes due; hopefully that will be 100,000 miles or so down the road. Check out my other posts regarding the transmission problems this car has had. It is fun to drive when it's running well, though and I haven't really spent much $$ for repairs but I'm not counting the "hassle" factor. I have another car that I used when this one was in the shop and perform other routine maintenance myself.
