CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2001 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, & problems with the airbag system (SRS). We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000. Transmission failure problems have been a huge problem for Honda Accords & other models all through the early 2000s model years. Honda eventually extended the transmission warranty to 93 months/109k miles for the 2000-2001 Accords as settlement for a class action lawsuit, but that period is over & owners of Accords with transmission problems are out of luck.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

The SRS warning light likes to come on due to a defective seat belt sensor -- typically the driver's side. This sensor is covered under Honda's lifetime seat belt warranty, but some dealers charge a $100+ "diagnostic fee" or tell customers the entire SRS unit ($800) is bad. Also make sure your 2001 Accord has been checked for the airbag recall: excessive pressure may cause metal fragments during airbag deployment.

I am currently fighting with Honda to fix my trasmission that went out under 60,000 miles. I am too tired to go into it all now but my story basically sounds like all the rest. What I am looking for is some information on my legal rights. Any lawyers familiar with Honda transmission suits and willing to hear me, please contact me. Any pissed off Honda customers who feel they have been shafted by Honda and who know where to start a class action or who have already started one, please contact me... I will definitely join or help to start it up. We all need to stand up to the injustice and it has to start somewhere. Let's get the ball rolling. Thanks for your time.

Honda need to recall for this transmission defect. My car is not yet 8 years old and has this problem. At lease Honda needs to compensate me some of the repairing cost.

Was on a 2200 mile trip to Calif from Montana. Transmission slipped - light came on in shape of a transmission. No problem driving the 13 hours on home over 2 high mountain passes. Parked it in the drive at 10:30 pm on Wed night and when started to drive it on Thurs morning - it would not shift out of 1st. Got it back in the drive, called Honda - I had 3 months left on the extended warranty. Had it towed to shop and received a call later that afternoon with "Your new transmission has been ordered and will be replaced at no cost to you". Those were the sweetest words to my ears. I asked how much it would have cost had the warranty been out - over $5000 - I could not have afforded that.

I was very pleased with the resolution of the problem. This transmission has a 12 month/12000 warranty on it. Hope it holds up!

Actually, my d4 and tcs and engine light come on all at once when this episode happens. When I restart the car, only the engine light remains on. I keep taking the car back to my mechanic to reset the engine light, but now I'm not sure how much longer my tranny will last. He says its a shift problem with the tranny. Already had a solenoid replaced, but it did absolutely nothing. The problem actually started back in 2006 at about same time Honda sent out an extended warranty to recall all Honda's with transmission problems up to 175,000kms. I started to notice a jerk in my driving, most of the mileage is highway..Not sure if Honda will still honor this warranty, the dealerships always give hard time, never any help. Car still runs at just over 250,000kms, but it's like a goldmine, not sure when the tranny will fail completely. Can anyone suggest something that can be done??

Was told about the Extended Warranty and researched it on Internet- Honda looked

at it and said it was not a problem. This a.m. on way to work - service engine light went on and D$ light was flashing - went right to Honda- they are fully warranting it!
