CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2001 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, & problems with the airbag system (SRS). We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.
The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000. Transmission failure problems have been a huge problem for Honda Accords & other models all through the early 2000s model years. Honda eventually extended the transmission warranty to 93 months/109k miles for the 2000-2001 Accords as settlement for a class action lawsuit, but that period is over & owners of Accords with transmission problems are out of luck.
Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.
The SRS warning light likes to come on due to a defective seat belt sensor -- typically the driver's side. This sensor is covered under Honda's lifetime seat belt warranty, but some dealers charge a $100+ "diagnostic fee" or tell customers the entire SRS unit ($800) is bad. Also make sure your 2001 Accord has been checked for the airbag recall: excessive pressure may cause metal fragments during airbag deployment.

Well I had purchased the car from a seller on craigslist. I had noticed a red illuminated light reading SRS on my dashboard I had no knowledge of what it was after further research of what the warning sign was. Reliable source given stated that reading indicated a possible malfunction of airbags present in the car
I took my car in for the air bag recall and 9 month later the SRS light came on and it's been on ever since. I called the dealership the did the air bag replacement and they told me that I have to pay $150 just for a diagnosis of what the problem can be..

The car was involved in a wreck with an 18 wheeler that had a trailer on it. It pulled out in front of my car and the trailer hit the front of my car where it totaled my car. The air bag had all types of trash that sms out once the air bag exploded.auhust
Takata recall - on Jan 10th 2017 my son was in a car accident with his 2001 Honda Accord and the airbag deployed and stuff hit him in the face he was bleeding all over his face. The car was totaled and its now sitting in a junkyard here where we live I have pictures of the car. My son was rushed to the emergency room in reno, nv. He is ok now and he a lot of cuts, bruises and had whiplash. This car was not safe for a teen to be driving for his first car! the car lost control on the highway and bounced several times off the guard rails at 65 mph.

Takata/Honda recall both of my airbags exploded deploying poison gas that made me dizzy and confused and hard time breathing also I received a laceration/burn from fragments in airbag on my arm in a minor collission at low rates of speed wiich caused very little damage to both cars in a rainy intersection ambulance and police were on scene
Takata recall" my red SRS light is on. I have been to the dealer in martinsville, va and I think a driver side airbag has been replaced. Why is my SRS red light on just after this"
Takata recall. I had the takata air bag recall on my Honda Accord. I called the number that was provided in the letters Honda sent to my house. We had the takata air bag issue fixed on November 7th at the Honda location in new rochelle. After I got my car back from them, the SRS light turned on which is related to air bag. I called the number back and they said they cannot do anything. I have to take it on my own and get it fixed but how does that make any sense" I called a few Honda locations and they told me they would charge me for a diagnostic! Honda puts in defective air bags and then they supposedly fix it and after that I get a light for air bags and I'm told I have to fix it on my own" extremely disappointed with Honda and their service. This is beyond frustrating.
Takata recall. The contact owns a 2001 Honda Accord. The contact stated that another vehicle crashed in the passenger side of the vehicle. The air bags deployed with metal fragments discharging from the inflator. The contact sustained an eye injury that required medical attention and resulted in the contact losing the eye. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed. The vehicle was inspected by the manufacturer and takata; however, the diagnosis was unknown. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 15V320000 (air bags). The failure mileage was 180,969.
Takata recall. The takata recall was fixed in Dec 2015. The SRS light came on constantly in July/Aug 2016. Called Honda and they stated there were no recalls or warranty service on this item - not related to the takata recall. This is not an isolated incident - there appear to be multiple instances of the same issue (SRS light illuminates following takata recall repair) in the ntsb complaint database and other complaints found through internet searches. Honda should extend this warranty when related to airbag issues since it is a safety issue - the airbags will not work when SRS system fails. They seem to have a lot of problems related to airbags.
