CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2000 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, & problems with the airbag system (SRS). We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 90,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

The SRS warning light likes to come on due to a defective seat belt sensor -- typically the driver's side. This sensor is covered under Honda's lifetime seat belt warranty, but some dealers charge a $100+ "diagnostic fee" or tell customers the entire SRS unit ($800) is bad.

The contact owns a 2000 Honda Accord. The contact noticed that the SRS warning light would consistently illuminate on the instrument control panel, which indicated that the air bags were inoperative. She took the vehicle to the dealer on two occasions and they performed routine maintenance, which temporarily corrected the issue. Weeks later, the failure recurred and the engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. She took her vehicle back to the dealer and they stated that she needed to replace both components at the discounted cost of $2,600. The vehicle has not been repaired. The contact sent a letter to the manufacturer, but never received a response. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 100,000 and current mileage was 122,000.

I have a 2000 Honda Accord ex and the current mileage is about 70000. A few days ago, for no reason, my SRS light was on. I called the Honda dealer and was told that it means in case of an accident, the air bag won't deploy. The dealer charges $130 just to diagnose the problem and not sure how much ensuing cost will be. I read a lot of on-line complaints about the same problem. It's not an isolated problem and has serious safety impact. Honda should put such defect under recall.

"2000 4-door Honda LX" - on or about October 2007, its SRS readiness indicator light illuminated. During its regular maintenance service, I took the car to Honda santa ana, ca and complained about this situation. The SRS light was reset only to find out after 3 days that it came back on. On January 2008 and March 2008, the same situation was handled by santa ana Honda and after 6-10 days, the light turned on again and again. I was finally informed that the control panel to the SRS unit was defective. Because the warranty had expired long after this problem persisted, the service advisor indicated that if santa ana Honda were to fix the equipment, it would cost me at least $1,600 which was reduced by 30% by its service manager john marker. It was then that I brought up the case to american North Honda motor co Inc and was handled by wayne at 1(800) 999-1009 ext. 118198. Wayne called and informed me that they are participating to this repair by reducing the cost by $300. It didn't make logical sense to me that the consumer is liable for costs involved in fixing a safety-related device that came with the vehicle. The fact that both santa ana Honda and North american Honda are both contributing to the costs of this repair, tells me that this is a defect of the vehicle. My family's 1999 Toyota Camry and friends' 2000 Toyota corolla never had their SRS worn out in the course of time, why would Honda have this problem? please assist me contact Honda to carry the burden of this costs or extend the warranty. My current mileage is now 120,000.

SRS light is on constantly. Paid dealer $100 to diagnose problem. I was told that both the left and right seat belt buckles need to be replaced at a cost of $600. I feel that this should be covered by the lifetime seatbelt warranty.

The SRS light on my 2000 Honda Accord ex is on. This indicates a defect in the airbag system, increasing my risk for injury in an accident. Honda should fix this problem under warranty as it is a common problem with this model.

  • 93,500 miles
My 2000 Honda Accord ex V6 with about 94,000 miles has the SRS light on permanently. The diagnostic code provided to me by the dealer is 5-8, which is internal SRS failure, and requires the SRS unit to be replaced. This is not covered under the current warranty extension (campaign code Q08, service bulletin 06-009) for opds. Given that the part is integral to the safety system, it seems that should have a much longer warranty. The car has not been involved in any sort of accident in two years, and previous accidents were minor rear end collisions (impacting the rear of my car). There was no incident to cause the SRS light to remain on.

I bought my Honda Accord this September. It had a rebuilt title due to minor dents and blemishes to the outside. No major wrecks. Looked and seemed in good condition. Dealer assured me that all of his cars were insurance claims due to minor exterior wear. He didn't take any cars that had been involved in wrecks. He was an "engineer" and didn't need to screw people over for money. I had my mechanic inspect it right away because it had a 30 day return policy, no questions asked. My regular mechanic said the engine was fine but there were minor things I needed such as; new rotors, new tires, and something to do with the emergency brake. His secretary said these were all optional things to have fixed. 1 month later...the radiator goes bad and must be replaced. My regular mechanic charges me $600 dollars for the procedure. I compare prices and find a better price for the same radiator. Unfortunately, my regular mechanic still charges me $70 for his opinion. I go to the cheaper place, get a new radiator and have my rotors replaced. Since about 2 weeks after owning the car I notice that the SRS airbag light flashes on and off randomly. A $80 diagnostic check was performed and nothing showed up. My mechanic didn't notice it when he drove it. I still don't know if my airbags work! a month after that..transmission goes bad when in reverse. Makes a terrible grinding of metal sound and lurches when put in reverse. Probably needs a new transmission which I have no way to pay for. Luckily, it is only a problem during the cold and/or when I first start the engine. Im very worried about the safety of my car and myself! because I've had 3 different people assure me the car is in good shape, only to find out about or have a major problem occur. I don't feel safe in my mystery car! I bought a Honda after being a loyal Toyota customer because I thought they had the best reputation for long lasting vehicles. I'm thinking I made a mistake. Please help lessen my worries.

SRS light has been on for over a year. The dealer said it would be very expensive to have it "looked at." Recently, the O2 sensor came on and I've made 3 trips to have it fixed. It will cost me $420.20 to have the problem solved. I've been reading about recalls for this very problem, and as a senior, I'd sure appreciate some help. This doesn't seem fair.

The contact owns a 2000 Honda Accord. While driving 45 mph, the SRS indicator illuminated. The dealer stated that the failure was due to a faulty battery and cable. Sears inspected the battery and found no failures. The dealer also stated that the failure was caused by a short in the board. No repairs were made. The VIN, engine size, and number of cylinders were unknown. The current mileage is 79,500 and failure mileage was 75,000. Updated 01/11/08. The battery replacement didn't solve the problem. Updated

I owned a Honda Accord 2000 ex model. We bought from dealer as new.5 years ago, the SRS light came on. We took to the dealer in atlanta Georgia (before we moved to California), their service attitude was extremely bad. And told us that we need to paid for our diagnostic fee and could cost us $1,500 to fix it I was extremely mad and called Honda corporate office in torrance. They were very bad too. We took it to the dealer in orange county, California. The service was outrageous bad. The SRS concern the deployment of airbag and should be a lifetime warranty. After extensive research, I found out that so many Honda Accord owners have the identical problem. We suggest nhts make this case with Honda and ask them to put this issue as lifetime warranty Honda North America is very bad.

My 2000 Honda Accord SE V4 auto has the mileage of 86,000. No accident or anything. Out of nowhere, SRS light stayed on. I have nothing on or around the passage seat. The car does not have side airbags. It bothers me a lot because of safety concern. I called Honda dealer and was told that they'd need the car during weekday for a whole day to diagnose, and cost would be from $150 and up. Sky is the limit. Besides, I can't go to work without the car or I have to rent a car myself. What a hassle. I am not sure if Honda warranty covers SRS light. I searched on the internet just to find out that I am not alone.

The contact owns a 2002 Honda Accord. While driving 30 mph, the contact crashed into the driver side door of another vehicle. The driver sustained injuries to her left leg and side. A police report was filed. The seat belt did not restrain her from moving forward and the air bag failed to deploy. The dealer replaced the seat belt buckle in June of 2007 and diagnosed the vehicle due to the SRS light illuminating. In August of 2002, the SRS was replaced due to recall number 02V051000 (seat belts:front:buckle assembly). Honda also sent an investigator to inspect the vehicle and concluded that they were not responsible for the failure. The current mileage was 51,250 and failure mileage was 51,184. The consumer stated was severely injured with hernia on right side and fractured pelvis on left major surgery to be performed. The consumer further stated seatbelt did not restrain nor did airbags deploy. Updated 09/10/07
