CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2000 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, & problems with the airbag system (SRS). We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 90,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

The SRS warning light likes to come on due to a defective seat belt sensor -- typically the driver's side. This sensor is covered under Honda's lifetime seat belt warranty, but some dealers charge a $100+ "diagnostic fee" or tell customers the entire SRS unit ($800) is bad.

While simply driving, the SRS light on the dash turned on for my 2000 Honda Accord V6. It appears that many people receive the SRS light in their Honda, yet few ever go get them fixed. The light has been fixed by the dealer for a whopping ~$400! this is absolutely outrageous. No wonder the people I know that has the SRS light don't want to get it fixed. This is a safety hazard for the driver and should be fixed for free! there were no injuries or and crashes in my case, but if there was to be a good sized accident, the airbags will not deploy. The dealer, I believe, replaced the entire driver's seat and the SRS sensor. Please, this has been a frequent problem with Honda - that the SRS light would spontaneously light up. This problem has to be addressed as this is a serious safety hazard.

My 2000 Honda Accord V-6 has approximately 85,000 miles on it and I have had very few problems. Always took to dealer for maintenance/repair. I had the alternator replaced in June 2005, and within 2 weeks of getting the car back, the SRS light came on. I called the dealer and they said I should bring the car in right away. I paid $68 to have the system "tested" and was told I needed to replace the entire computer system for the air bags at a cost of $575, or I could have them reset it and it may or may not come back on. I asked what happens when the light was on and was told that the airbags just won't work. I opted for the reset. Now, 2 weeks later, the light is back on. I have done some internet research and have found that not only is this a known problem, but the "cures" that are suggested by the dealer are all over the map. I find it incredible that Honda is not responsible for this defect in a mandated safety device. My family will hold Honda responsible if I am injured or killed due to a non-inflating airbag. I do not believe the company is taking the airbag issue seriously. My daughter was thankfully not killed in a serious accident last June in her civic, whose airbags did not deploy when she was hit with such force that it tore the front engine housing off her car and resulted in a total loss. The Honda folks told us then that sometimes the car isn't "hit the right way" and the sensors don't register that the airbags should deploy. I think the same government that requires these devices be installed on all cars (and the ones we pay for when purchasing the cars) should hold the car makers/dealers responsible for making sure they are operable.

The tranmission will shift gears very losely and makes a clunking sound but only when it is in reverse. Now it shifts slugishly. Took dealer to the dealer twice and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Now they think it is the motor mounts. The first time this happened was in October of 2002. Dash board lighting goes blank. A faulty multiflex light unit was found. Front brakes worn. Check engine light was on. Found faulty egr valve assembly and replaced. SRS light is on. Faulty opds unit was found.

The vehicle is a 2000 Honda Accord V6 ex, the cylinder has a cracked head. On 6-18-05 consumer was driving when white smoke came out of the dual exhaust. Consumer had vehicle towed to the dealership. They told her that it was because of the cracked cylinder head. The coolant mixed with the oil and caused hot steam to come from the vehicle. Previously the SRS light came on. Consumer believed that it meant the air bags were disabled. Nothing has been done to fix the vehicle. It is currently at the dealership.

Subject: Honda 2000 Accord SRS light safety defect dear administrator: Honda dealer at salinas in California performed recall "ignition lock" work on my car on 3/16/05 (please see attached invoice). After that, the SRS (airbags) light remains on my car. My car currently only has 32,600 miles. Before the dealer performed the recall work, my car was perfectly fine. I called dealer about this SRS light issue. Dealer said I have to pay $101 for a computer diagnoses plus extra fee to fix the problem found. I, however, disagree because the SRS light was on right after the dealer performed the recall work. Before that, my car was in the perfectly shape and never got involve in any accident. As the dealer said, the airbags will not deploy while the SRS light is on. I think my car?S SRS light issue is caused by either the dealer is unable to remedy the defect in my vehicle or it is another safety defect in Honda 2000 Accord. Therefore, your kind help on my case is greatly appreciated! sincerely, [xxx] P.S. car info: Honda 2000 Accord LX 4dr, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

SRS light remains on. Side SRS comes on in turns. Dealer has stated that something in the seat needs to be replaced and we have no driver SRS at this time. Vehicle is under used certified warranty but dealer states this is not covered by warranty. We puchased a Honda (have owned many!) because of reliability, durability and safety. Does not federal law require SRS on current model vehicles? how can such a company refuse to fix such a major problem>>>

The airbag warning light (srv) came on, and local garage checked it out on their computer. They came up with a "code 9-2 air bag internal fault", and said I would have to take it to the Honda dealer for repair. I took it to the Honda dealer, and was told that they would have to run their own independent computer check, and, if a fault was found, I would be responsible for the cost of repair. My complaint: First, air bags being such an important safety item, and their installation mandated by the government, I feel that when a defect appears, a recall at the manufacturer's expense is in order. Second, if the safety board does not have a sufficient number of similiar complaints to order a recall, then at the very least the manufacturer should be required to pay for the computer test.

I have the known issue with my 2000 Honda Accord where the SRS airbag light stays on. You can do a google search and see the widespread nature of this problem. Honda says if the airbag light is on the airbag may not deploy in a accident and others have had the airbag go off while driving normally. When I call my dealer they pretend not to know anything and want tons of money to even check it out. I have the Honda care extended warranty and the dealer won't even verify if the problem is covered or not.

The SRS airbag light came on at approximately 69,000 mi.the car was taken to dealer and no fault codes were found on the computer. I had the delphi alternator load tested and determined that could be the culprit. During this time, I also had both of my headlamps burned out within weeks of each other. I replaced the alternator with an aftermarket one and have not had any problems since.

Problem began when airbag SRS light came on. I brought the car to my mechanic who informed me that the entire airbag system needed to be replaced. A couple months later, the light again turned back on and it turned out that one of the replacement parts was again defective and needed to be replaced again. My mechanic informed me that this was a common problem with the Honda's but it was not a recall, I contacted the Honda service department and they stated that this was not considered a defect and therefore could not be replaced without charge since my warrantee had run out. In May 2004 my check engine light came on and I was informed by my mechanic that this was a defect within the engine and required the egr to be fixed. I checked online to see if this could be something I could get some recourse on and again it is not a recall even though it is a known problem among Honda Accord. I just feel like I should have some recourse. Within the last year I've had to pay out more than two thousand dollars in charges to have these defective parts fixed. If they are defective they should be replaced by Honda free of charge.

My 2000 Honda Accord has its SRS lights on again and will not go off. I brought it to my mechanic who put the car on the computer and said "theres a malfunction in my airbags, I have to go to Honda" ($40). I brought the car to Honda that same morning (9:30 am), informed them about my mechanic's response & that I commute a distance and don't feel safe driving the car, so they took it in. At 4:30 pm, they decided to put it on the computer and wow...there is a problem with my air bag system ($94.61). No accidents, nothing - it just came on while I was driving. Honda told me "not to worry, that my airbag isn't just going to go off as I drive down the highway.....it just won't go off if you crash". real safety feature of the car. My diagnosis: Code 9-3...drivers seat belt buckle failure (estimated cost to repair: $287 plus tax on top of the initial $94 I just gave them). This is 100% a safety issue and should absolutely be Honda responsibility. How can I be certain that they have not always been broken? this is totally ridiculous and I am appalled at Honda's ignorance to this matter.

Chronic problem with SRS warning light. Fixed once by Honda dealer under warranty. Problem reoccured when vehicle out of warranty. No apparent reason for problem, no accidents, nothing I did. Auto would not pass state inspection with SRS light on, so fixed again ($500 repair bill) at Acura dealer that sold car to me. Problem reoccured after 3 months, went away by itself after 3 days, then reoccured again at 4 months after repair. Talked to several other Honda owners and this seems to be a common problem and possible latent defect in manufacturer's product.
