CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1999 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, engine shuts off while driving, & peeling paint. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.
The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.
Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.
Engine stalling while driving in the 1999 Accord is typically caused by a defective ignition switch -- inexpensive to repair (under $200) but dangerous.
Peeling paint has also been an issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

About These NHTSA Complaints:
This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Have been having transmission problems and am seeing a trend to others having similar problems. The dealer quoted $8000 new or $3327 for used. I don't think we should be having transmission problems on a car that is 3 years old. Anyone else having problems?
Transmission failure at 46,000 (this was already reported to NHTSA). Check engine light has come on again - this time it is the catalytic convertor and 02 sensors.
Experienced extremely hard shifting at 40 mph. The engine would rev, die down, and then suddenly jerk into gear. From day-one have expeienced ackward shift from 2-3. at time of each recommended service requested staff address issue. Typical response that how car ws design. Now at 52,000 miles need to replace transmission. Honda of american is doing a 50/50 spilt of the cost to replace transmission. Dealers price to repair was $5300. Honda of America price approximately $2400, half paid by consumer.
The vehicle had a problem with the transmission. Honda issued a recall which only affected Honda Accord with a V6 engine, 2000 to 2001, and the consumer stated his vehicle also experienced the same problems from the recall but Honda will not extend the warranty on the Honda 1999 Accord. It cost $4000 for a recondition transmission, the consumer requested that Honda reimburse him for the defective vehicle.
Delay in acceleration when accelerator is depressed. The vehicle experienced a short delay when the accelerator was pressed. The check engine light illuminated. The vehicle jerked forward upon acceleration and the vehicle became noticeably louder when shifting between gears. The technician indicated that the transmissions component appeared to be used or remanufactured.
1999 Honda Accord V6 transmission needing to be rebuilt at only 87K miles. This was due to the trans slipping and shifting erratically. The exact same problem as listed with the 2000-2001 models.
The differential bearings on my transmission failed at 49K miles and damaged my transmission. I had my transmission rebuilt by a private company when Honda told them that it was not under warranty. I was told by Honda that they may have done helped if a dealer had done the work.
I have a 1999 Honda Accord exv6 the transmission started slipping 3 months ago. I called my dealer at that time because I had received a letter Nov 2001 from Honda stating that there was a warrany extension for egr system clogging. The service advisor stated that this would not help my case. Now at 70000 I need a new transmission.I bought this car after owning a Toyota for 12 years w/ no problems. To say the least I am disgusted.
1999 Honda Accord ex V-6 transmission failure. I had been noticing acceleration problems. I thought the problem was with fuel injection. I was coming back from a weekend trip and the check engine light came. I took the car to the dealer the next day for the 75,000 mile service. They said it was the transmission. The next day it failed the transmission test. Dealer said it would have to be replaced. I do not drive long distances and I do not feel safe in the car.
Transmission slips and lurches. Requested dealer service and adjustment. Fluids replaced, but no service performed. Service manager evasive and mis-leading. Made appointment for adjustment, fluid and filter change, dealer did just one. Fluid was not burnt or discolored. Problem persists. Warranty extension should be ordered expanded to include 1999 model.
Transmission failed in my Honda Accord 99. With research I found alot of consumers that had the transmissions fail in their Accord 99/2000/2001's. the 200+ transmission were under recall. I directly asked Honda if the part (auto transmission) was the same in the 99 Accord as the 2000 / 2001 which is under recall. Though several Honda dealerships I found out that the part (auto transmission) is exactly the same in a 99, 2000 or 2001 Honda Accord. The Honda warranty team would not admit (again I directly asked) that the part was the same. Thus, I am left with Honda knowing that 99 Accord's have known defective automatic transmissions that fail at road speed (erratic shifting). My transmission failed on an interstate at 60 mph road speed by shifting from drive to reverse. I almost got hit by an 18 wheeler that had to go off road to avoid my car. I guess when the fatalities grow big enough to warrant a class action suit Honda will be forced to recall.
Honda Accord 99', transmission failure at 60,000 miles. Other years (98) have had warranty extended due to design failure, but not the 99. 99 should be included!
