CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1999 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, engine shuts off while driving, & peeling paint. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

Engine stalling while driving in the 1999 Accord is typically caused by a defective ignition switch -- inexpensive to repair (under $200) but dangerous.

Peeling paint has also been an issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

Rear seat belts on both sides have frayed in identical places, where the shoulder belt enters the housing in the seat. Plastic "guard" is sharped edged, and has cut 1/2" into each seat belt. Showed to dealer during routine mtc. They claimed they hadn't seen anything like this ("did you close it in the door?" "no, we hardly use the back seats at all, since only two adults ride/drive this car.") they agreed to one round of replacement under warranty, but we expect it may happen again.

Fuel gauge never read full, on a full gas tank. Dealer replaced fuel sending unit, which resolved the problem. Driver's side seat belt gets caught on the release lever of the seat-back while seat belt is buckled. This severely restricts the of movement of the driver. When this happens, I am strapped very tight in the seat until I can manage to remove the seat belt part that is stuck to the release lever.

I feel there is a serious safety problem with the rear seat belts. When you put them on, they lock tight around your neck and you can not loosen them unless you unhook them and let the belt go all the way back. I went to the dealer today to see if this was a defect and was told that this is what they are suposed to do. If these belts do not give during a collision, they will break your neck or choke you to death. Please advise. I thought seat belts were ment to be adjustable.
