CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1999 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, engine shuts off while driving, & peeling paint. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

Engine stalling while driving in the 1999 Accord is typically caused by a defective ignition switch -- inexpensive to repair (under $200) but dangerous.

Peeling paint has also been an issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

Takata recall I had problems with getting the key to turn in the ignition. It eventually failed. I was informed by a professional that it was the key. I had the key replaced. Honda tried to charge me for the key knowing that there was a recall. Too, my headlights have always been very dimmed. I have bought several replacements. They still appear very dim.

My 16 year old daughter was coming home from school in the rain and was unable to stop in time to keep from rear ending another vehicle. Our car sustained extreme front end damage. Fortunately there were no injuries but the air bags did not deploy. The entire front end is crumpled and still the air bags did not deploy. I thought my daughter was driving a safe car.

All dash lights go out on my 1999 Honda Accord when the headlights are turned on. A safety recall was done for this problem caused by a defected multiplex control unit on the Honda Accord years 2000 to 2004. Why are older Accord not covered under this recall since the same defective part was installed on them?

While driving at night exterior lighting failed to work. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. The consumer stated that in a prior service bulletin by Honda these components are all linked to a faulty multipexor switch ( service bulletin #00-07C). In talking to Honda the consumer was told the service bulletin was pertaining to exports. The consumer agreed to pay for the service to be done now the lights stay on all the time now. Problem still exists.
