CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1999 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, engine shuts off while driving, & peeling paint. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.
The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.
Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.
Engine stalling while driving in the 1999 Accord is typically caused by a defective ignition switch -- inexpensive to repair (under $200) but dangerous.
Peeling paint has also been an issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

The contact has a 1999 Honda Accord. The gas pedal is very stiff when the vehicle is turned off for more than an hour. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who stated the pedal is having a hard time engaging at first and then as the vehicle warms the pedal resets and the pedal works properly. The failure mileage was 50000 and the current mileage was 55000. The VIN was unavailable.
I was driving to work as usual, when my accelerator pedal got stuck while trying to find a parking space. It was a cold morning, around 12 degrees, so I first thought that I was slipping on ice and had no control of the car. Once off the icy patch, my car continued to take off on me, even with my foot on the brakes. It actually continued to speed up and that was the moment I knew I was in trouble. I was in the parking lot when this happened, so I did not have alot of room or time to put it in neutral or actually jump out. I sped out of the entry, through the street, over the curb, through the fence and landed on railroad ties, that thankfully high centered me, and another fence that ultimately stopped me. Both bags deployed and my car was totaled. Once I knew that I was O.K., I put the car in park, and the engine was still revving. That, I know, is not right. The whole time I could smell burnt rubber or brakes. I know the difference between my gas and brake pedal, and I definitely had my brakes applied. Why would I want to cause this kind of damage to my car and especially myself ? I could have actually killed myself or someone else. If it was not for the railroad ties that high centered me. I would have gone right through the second fence and ended up, who knows where. I definitely had an angel watching over me. I am so upset and sore that I don't know what to do. I spent all day on the internet looking at other incidents involving the same make and model with accelerator problems, especially in cold weather. I guess this is not just "driver error" that everyone seems to think, now is it.
The consumer stated 1999 Honda Accord I had carbon build up in the throttle, which is resulted in the throttle sticking. Regardless, of how long the vehicle sat, when the consumer gave the vehicle gas, the throttle stuck. It did not matter if it was in reverse or forward. This problem was intermittent, and has been happening for the past 4 to 5 years. This has been reported this to the dealer. They suggested that she bring it in for a throttle cleaning, which she did. The mechanic from the dealership told her that she would have to have this done again because it would continue to happen. The consumer called the dealership and the manufacturer, and they have been of no help. And often refer her to have the throttle cleaned again at her cost. At this rate, the throttle would have to be cleaned every few months. At this point, the throttle is sticking and needs to be cleaned, but the owner suggested that this should be covered by the manufacturer as a safety improvement or recall.
Gas pedal sticks when starting the car. Must press hard to get car in motion and then quickly let off so car will not go out of control speed wise. Usually when car has been setting for a while or cold outside. I feel it is unsafe in parking lots or anywhere people may be walking by car when this has to be done as the car "jumps" and the engin reves up. Been doing this for about a year now. Giving the last date it occurred.

Consumer complained about gas pedal problem. It does not move as freely as it should. Consumer has to step on the gas pedal very hard to get the vehicle going when moving from a start position.. this occurs only after the vehicle has been sitting for a while.
Accelerator pedal sticks when depressed-extremely dangerous! needed to shift to neutral and physically reach down and pull pedal up while travelling at a high rate of speed. Thankfully no other drivers were nearby!
Intermittently gas pedal stuck, and there was a sudden acceleration. Dealer indicated the need to clean and lubricate. The throttle. But, there was no indication in the owner's manual how to lubricate the throttle.
When the accelerator pedal is pressed vehicle hesitates and jumps. Took vehicleto dealer, dealer said, " they will not do anything to the vehicle until engine light illuminated".
While driving on the freeway at 45 my 99 Honda Accord began to accelorate to uncontrolable speeds, nearing 80-85 mph. I attempted to push the break without luck put the car in neutral and punched the gas peddal as hard as I could for it to release.
1.) sometimes when I start the car the gas pedal sticks. 2.) while coming to a stop the car shuts off as if the battery died. The battery is fine. 3.) yesterday duiring the day the car would not start, acted as if it wasen't getting any fuel. The gas tank is full. After several attemps and waiting for 15-minutes the car started ok. I have serviced my car as required.
Consumer was traveling 2mph and accelerator pedal got stuck. When pushing it down harder vehicle went into a crosswalk, and hit a pedestrian. Dealership was aware of problem. Consumer states this is the second time this has happened consumer states the first time it happened was on Feb 23, 2001 she hit a vehicle as ahe was trying to accelerate.
When stepping on accelerator it will stick without a prior warning. Consumer had to drive to side and turn off engine.then, restarted and accelerator worked again, and after awhile would stick once again.
