CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1999 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, engine shuts off while driving, & peeling paint. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

Engine stalling while driving in the 1999 Accord is typically caused by a defective ignition switch -- inexpensive to repair (under $200) but dangerous.

Peeling paint has also been an issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Accord. While driving approximately 45 mph on normal conditions, the vehicle stalled without warning. The warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel after the failure occurred. The engine restarted after ten minutes and the vehicle resumed normal operation. The failures occurred intermittently and the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. The dealer stated that the failure was related to the ignition switch. The technician stated that the vehicle was previously repaired according to NHTSA campaign id number 02V120000 (electrical system:ignition:switch); however, the remedy was insufficient and did not address the issue. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 146,000.

For the last 4 to 5 years my 1999 Honda Accord has stalled for no apparent reason or would not start up right away. I had taken my Honda to several places for checkups, I have replaced the battery and a sensor several times before a diagnostic check indicated that I likely had an ignition switch problem, that repair company referred me to my Honda dealership where I purchase the vehicle new and the dealer could not duplicate the problem. Yesterday my wife had the car on the city of memphis busiest street when it stalled with her in the center lane without any warning by the indicator lights. She called me frantic telling me that almost every car passing her nearly hit her. I called the police to help get traffic control to help her. She as a few others have indicated could not get the car to shift gears to neutral while stalled. Finally after sitting 10 minutes she was able to start the car. If this would have happened and my wife was rear ended with my 19 month old daughter in the car, I would have likely gone nuts on Honda. Instead this morning I took the car into the dealer who kept the car running for a while when they were able to get the car to stall (or so they say). The dealer switched out the ignition switch at a cost of $300 on top of the $75 diagnostic at the dealer one month ago and a $49 diagnostic at a small service station not to mention the sensors that were switched out that did not solve the problem. I have already filed a complaint with Honda indicating that this problem is a life safety issue which they should replace free of charge. If this happens again I will likely see a lawyer I just pray that my family is not injured or worse. This morning the dealer indicated that the problem could also be the main relay but since they were able to supposedly able to duplicate the problem they replaced only the ignition switch. Please let me know if anyone else is involved in litigation to get this problem resolved and receive reimbursement.

The vehicle had been experiencing intermittent, sudden and complete engine stalling over the past several months. My local independent shop could not find a problem. The car finally stalled completely and the steering column started smoking. Dealer replaced ignition switch and said it was under recall. I never received notice from Honda of a recall. During two recent visits to the dealer the paperwork indicated that there were no open recalls on the car. I have lived at the same address since purchasing the car new in 1999. I received and responded to an earlier recall. However I believe that Honda and their dealers are now neglecting to inform owners of required recalls. I was unnecessarily put in dangerous situations and spent a great deal of time and money addressing a problem I was not properly notified about.

On 01/10/2009, I brought my 1999 Accord to the dealer because the engine had been stalling. This problem started a year ago and has progressively gotten worse. The tech replaced the ignition back switch and also performed the safety recall of the ignition switch key interlock. A week later, the car stalled again. The car now stalls more frequently than before.

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Accord. While driving at various speeds, the engine stalls intermittently. The vehicle loses complete power prior to the failure. The contact stated that it is difficult to steer the vehicle due to the loss of power steering and brakes. Occasionally, it takes a couple of minutes or over an hour for the vehicle to restart. The vehicle was taken to an authorized Honda center and they stated that the electrical contacts in the ignition switch were worn and needed to be replaced. The failure mileage was 200,000.

In 2002 - 2004 my 1999 Honda, Accord had a recall to replace ignition switch, vehicle could stall in traffic causing an accident. I had the ignition switch replaced by Honda in 2004. December 2008, my vehicle while driving down the road just shuts off, after a few minutes restarts. The vehicle shutting off starts to get more frequent, so I take it to a mechanic, who replaces the ignition switch. The problem seems to be fixed for now. Apparently Honda didn't fix the problem with the first recall.

Ignitions switch was replaced due to car randomly stalling on at least 6 occasions while driving resulting in near collisions due to loss of power steering, power brakes and the ability to accelerate in order to safely remove vehicle from the roadway. Honda customer service informed me that the ignitions switch had been recalled however the ignitions switch had previously been replaced on my vehicle several years ago under this recall and any repair would be at my own expense. Repair invoice is available as can verification of the problem by the repair shop who experienced the same problem while test driving the vehicle. I feel this repeated problem illustrates failure on Honda to resolve the original problem associated with the defective ignition switch which presents an immediate treat to life of all owners of the 1999 Honda Accord and the public at large affected by the original recall and another recall should be mandated by the NHTSA.

Accord 6-cyl

  • 135,000 miles
Main relay problems I recently purchased a 99 Honda Accord le coupe - 6 cylinder automatic. Once I got the car home I found that the car had a starting problem. Early morning when the temperature was cool the car would start fine. After sitting in the sun all day while at work the car would fail to start. Opening the doors and letting the interior heat drop would allow the vehicle to start. With no satisfaction from the dealer other than looking at me like I was crazy I searched the internet for Honda hard starting problem... I found a website that gave the same problem that I was having and directed to how to repair the main relay. I followed the directions as they explained and re-soldered 5 connections on the printed circuit of the main relay... since that time the Honda will start in any type of weather. Just seems odd after searching the forums and the amount of people that have had the same problems that I was having and nobody has seemed to know what it was... some searching turned up a problem resolve... now you mean to tell me that im not the only one having the problem and Honda service centers tell me that they have never heard of a problem like mine.... don't get me wrong I love the Accord and can live with some of the problems but as a customer I expect that Honda would at least acknowledge that there is a problem and by the description they should be able to tell me what they think it is and how much it would cost to repair the vehicle....I'm not chasing a recall... I simply want my car to start when I turn the key...

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Accord. While driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle lost power. The contact pulled over to the side of the road. The vehicle was able to be restarted after it was shifted back into park. The failure has occurred consistently for the past year. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop and the mechanic stated that the failure was due to a defective ignition switch. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in any recalls; therefore, they would not cover the cost for repairs. The current mileage was 150,000 and failure mileage was 130,000.

After my second Honda ignition switch had been replaced after almost getting me killed by cutting out while I was going 80 (in a 75), the replacement which has been in my car for about 5 weeks and installed by Honda of flagstaff AZ, with around 1000 miles on it is now exhibiting the same pre-failure symptoms exhibited by the switch it had replaced. Failure to start after being left in direct sun for prolonged period. It then will stall immediately after starting, then refuse to turn over at all. Additionally, and here is the safety complaint, the car will lose its electrics and them spontaneously turn back on while the car is being operated. The incident on August 9th occurred on city streets in escondido ca at speeds between 15 and 35 mph.

Mileage at start of problem, , app 60,000 now 130,000 in 08! I bought my 99 Accord with 56,000 miles in 2003. I was called about the recall on the ignition switch, and Honda replaced it for free, although at that time I was not having any problems. Ok I started having problems with my car stalling. First time was on I40 going app 75. I was in the outer freaking lane and it just turned off. I lived with this very freaking hazardous problem for a long time because I didn't trust Honda and money (just note one of the phone calls from Honda the man told me he thought it was my ignition switch again and that they wouldn't be responsible for the cost of repair this freaking time but later decided it was something else, !)I was in college taking my emt practicals with an ems system and was having to drive to another county and be in contact via cell phone with Honda, and borrow my dads truck!! they had my car for days and keep calling and asking if one of there mechanics could drive my car to lunch, , and if they could take it home over night and so on, and finally said it wouldn't stall for them!!!!! I was '!@#$%! they did another diagnostic test of 75$ and my check engine light wasn't even on! they also said I needed new spark plugs, I had new spark plugs and im not an idiot, , there was nothing absolutely nothing wrong with the "!@#$% things. They also eventually decided that I needed my fuel system cleaned, because they really didn't know what to do and this is what they said themselves! they told me they wouldn't charge me for the diagnostic fee if I got the 120$ new spark plugs, mine were new and working very well. So of course I had no option. After reading S few complaints here and on other sites, I am seeing that they totally took me for over 500$ and that my problem was in my ignition switch, , im wondering if they snuck and replaced it again behind my back just to charge me for other '!@#$% they didn't do. I hate Honda I hate Honda, , I want some "!@#$% justice.

I have a 1999 Honda Accord LX with a 4 cylinder vtec engine. 1-12-08 while driving at lower speeds--typically 30 to 45 mph the car will jerk and change gears when not needed. At highway speeds the car stalls and I have to shift to neutral to restart. Update: May 2008 and I have no reverse gear at all. After reading all the complaints I would really like to know why Honda has not put a recall on these 1998 and 1999 transmissions. Why" does someone really have to die before they fix their own problem" I am calling Honda in the morning and if I don't get satisfactory results I would like to start a negative campaign against Honda. This is crazy and I want answers.

The dealer asked the consume had the battery been replaced in the vehicle. The consumer stated the battery had been replaced. Engine shuts down while driving. This seems always to occur within a minute or so after the anti-lock braking system light comes on. Otherwise I have no way to predict when it will happen, and it has occurred in a variety of traffic conditions including while driving at high speed on express or freeway lanes. I have taken the vehicle to the dealer three times with this complaint and they deny that anything is wrong or that they can fix it. The incident date reported here is only the most recent occurrence.
