The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.
Peeling paint has also been a huge issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.
Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

Consumer states that while driving at any speed and without warning the steering wheel will lock up and it will be hard for the consumer to control the vehicle. Dealer notified.
Investigated 2 accidents in the last 1-1/2 weeks on 97 and 98 Honda Accord that was going at highway speeds when driver said steering column locked up when passing another car. Resulted in head on collision at highway speed. Unable to find any problem with steering or suspension parts on either car at time of inspection. Nlm
