CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1998 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, peeling paint, & subframe rust. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.
The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.
Peeling paint has also been a huge issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.
Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

Drivers seat acts as if the two front seat mount bolts are not bolted to the floor it rocks back when you accelerate. It started with just slight movement back and within a 30 days it now moves several inches everytime you accelerate. You have to keep a tight grip on the steering wheel when you drive or you could move back far enough to have your hands slip off the wheel. Nothing has been done to fix the problem but I have had estimate for a $1200 repair as they said the entire seat track and motor will have to be replaced.

Upon rear impact, a popping noise was heard and the seats reclined. The driver and passenger suffered back injuries. Problem involving broken seat rails on 1998 Honda Accord. The consumer found a recall through a Honda service update 03-034 concerning seat linkage assembly. The problem that the update indicated was the same type of failure that the consumer's car exhibited. The consumer was told that although his vehicle was built between the dates given that his vehicle was not included in the service update due to VIN. The consumer contacted that manufacturer for assistance but they were unwilling to provide any financial assistance.
I own 1998 Honda Accord uex, and I'm told the rail that holds the drivers seat is broken. This makes seat belts and other safety devices useless as the seat is essentially a rocking chair and unsecured. The dealer refuses to fix the problem even though it was brought to the dealers attention while it was still under warranty.
The passenger seat of my 1998 Honda Accord broke upon rear-end crash(my Honda was hit in the rear) and the seat did not hold the recoil impact of a seat-belted passenger causing injury to passenger.
