This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Driver's seat attachment structure broke in two places, where rail attaches to car floor. Both failures are at the ourboard, front corner of seat. These failures happened about 6 to 7 months apart from each other. Sadly, I know two other Suburban owners with same problem (coincidence?) but manufacturer denies there is an issue. Perhaps if enough people are injured in accidents, they will change their decision.
48202 seat frame driver side bucket made of thin metal. The metal failed which caused the driver seat to fall backwards while braking. Research reveals this has been a long term problem. Researching your reports reveals 94-11 reports for Suburban, 7 under Yukon, 95 - 35 reports under Suburban, 20 under Yukon, and other reports under 96 and 93.
The left front corned of the drivers seat frame broke off. This makes the extremely unstable and causes dangerous driving conditions. I would speculate that even if the track was not broken completely off, that if the vehicle were hit from behind the drivers seat could be thrown backwards or sideways if the weaken frame would break the rest of the way upon impact. I contacted General Motors Corp (file #C01667539) about this problem and was told to take the vehicle to groulx olds/GMC dealership (monroe Michigan 734-241-3704) to have the seat inspected, which I did. Upon inspection of the seat frame, groulx mechanics confirmed the frame had failed, but could not replaced the frame without authorization from General Motors Corp. Unless I was willing to pay for the repair myself. I talked to General Motors Corp. Representative in customer relations and was informed that because of the mileage they would not stand behind repair of this problem. I asked if this means that if the frame rusts in half or the brake lines fail or a wheel falls off because of defective equipment. ***dimsii IVOQ entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****732830****
Front seat frame, power leather bucket seat. Frame has failed in the forward left hand side of the seat. This is the second 1995 truck/Suburban that I have owned that has had the same problem. Seat now is worst than a bobble head doll.
Drivers seat frame metal failed tearing adjacent to connection to floor bracket. This caused driver's seat to tip back during operation adversly affecting vehicle control. Problem apparently reported by other vehicle owners on NHTSA site. Manufacturer denied responsibility for defect in seat frame.
The metal frame of the driver's seat popped off of the vehicle's frame when my husband leaned back to get some change out of his pocket. The metal bar that is bolted to the car frame just ripped away from the bolt, like a piece of fabric. I have saved the seat frame in case you want a picture. I was concerned that other Suburban might have the same problem and the driver would only find out upon an impact, in which case the driver would probably get strangled by the seatbelt. I would like to know if any other similar defects have been reported.
Drivers seat, bottom, front part of seat frame cracked and separated from anchor point. Several stress cracks found around anchor point. Seat frame must be replaced. Dealer indicated that this has not been uncommon. He now stocks the seat frames. Is this a issue that is considered a "recall" defect? I have pictures if wanted. Send E-mail address where to send the pictures if wanted.
Driver's seat fell backwards and to right while vehicle was in operation traveling at approximately 25 mph. Upon examination, metal frame of seat where it was attached to track, had metal fatigue on left front corner. This caused seat to break completely off with fastener. Dealership informed consumer over the phone that they were aware of problem, but would not repair defect free of charge. Please provide any additional information/attachments. *note: Consumer felt that metal of subframe for seat was too thin.
Driver seat metal plate where bolts are attached to were braking due to metal fatigue. During an accident seat will not hold. Manufacturer had been contacted.
Driver's seat frame bolt welds broke, causing seat to rock back & forth when gas or brake pedal was applied. Have taken vehicle to dealership & mechanic indicated that bolts were repairable. Item is not on recall.
Drivers side seat anchoring metal failed causing seat to rock back and forth enough to cause difficulate driving conditions. My concern is that this is not an isolated case. The dealer I contacted told me this happens a lot and a used parts dealer I called said he gets 4 TO5 cals a week for this part. I have owned many cars and trucks ans have never had a set break.
Driver's seat bracket to frame structural failure causing seat to be unstable and unsafe. When dealer informed on the problem, one person admitted to seeing numerous cases of this problem, the service people denied ever seeing it before. The entire seat pan needs to be replaced to rectify the problem replacing it with the same design that failed in the first place.
Driver's seat frame broke. Would rock forwards & backwards when brakes are applied. This causes havoc for driver. Took vehicle to body shop & seat was welded together. Problem keeps reappearing.
