My 2023 Sierra has an issue with the tailgate opening at any given time while in park. The dealer denied such issue until I noted a GM recall on the tailgate switch becoming contaminated with water. My issue is the amount of items, such as tools, half full plastic gas cans, shovel, etc, that I have lost out the rear of my vehicle endangering other motorists. My tailgate has become damaged, mostly paint damage, however I am more concerned about the public's safety and other GM trucks with the same growing issue. It was not until my dead battery (in a 2023 vehicle) caused me to discover the tailgate issue was connected to the short in the release switch. I also have a tonneau cover so I cannot see the tailgate and the truck gives no indication of the tailgate being down. This problem began within a few months after purchase.
UNKNOWN. While I was driving down the interstate going 75MPH the top part of my grill flew off cracking my wondshield. I pulled over and pick it up and all the plastic welded factory clips broke off. This is a seriously dangerous issue that should be recalled and covered by GMC
Tailgate dropped while driving on the freeway. I was towing a utility trailer at the rime and the Tailgate hit the hitch area and scratched the Tailgate. It also dropped when not towing anything. I am leary to haul anything in the back of my truck
On May 5, 2024, while driving my 2023 GMC Sierra truck on HWY 40 near Holbrook, AZ, the tailgate lowered un-commanded twice while driving. I called GMC and they told me that my vin is not included in the recall. There is a recall for this exact problem however GMC said it is only for GMCC truck built at a specific plant. This happened twice and did significant damage to my tailgate.
I bought truck brand new one week later the tailgate opened while driving and hit the trailer and destroyed the tailgate. So I bought a brand New tailgate and repaired truck. Few months ago it happened again all my tools flew out into the highway almost caused a major accident and destroyed my saw and tools got thrown all over the road. Last week it opened again and destroyed the new tailgate I bought. The dealer is aware, gmc is aware and no parts to fix it or does anyone want to help me just let me drive a truck that is so unsafe. It's all over the internet this issue people are saying there tailgate opens while driving and gmc made a statement saying they are aware but not helping me. Sold me a truck for alot of money knowing it's a major dangerous defect that can cause major damage and serious injury on the road.

I walked from my garage to the back of my truck to the driver door a drove away. At my destination the tailgate was open and my chainsaw was sitting there. Absolutely no way I could walk past my tailgate and not see the Stihl chainsaw looking at me and drive off without closing it first. I-??ve owned the truck 1 week at this point.
2023 GMC 1500 Sierra Denali Ultimate tailgate opens without being commanded. This has happened approximately six times with damage to the tailgate in the last incident on 2/8/2024. There were not any warning lights. Safety is affected by having an open tailgate and cargo potentially leaving the vehicle. I have seen a recall pending for the same issue however seems to be limited to 2500 / 3500 series vehicles.
Tailgate opens by itself, a know issue by GM and Sierra drivers. Mine was damaged by opening and banging against my travel trailer. I have been talking with GM about this since September. Today a different department told me they require up to 30 days to investigate and if I pay for the repairs myself they will cancel the investigation. Objects flying out of my pickup bed could damage my vehicle, my camper and others on the road.
I have approximately 7K miles on my truck. The problem I am reporting is the omission of a warning light or some other method of warning if the tailgate which is electronically controlled by a button center near the console, central to and just above an area provided for storage of loose personal items, and also activated by a electronic key FOB which I keep in my pocket while driving. I have had at least 8 instances of the gate opening while driving. I expect others have had the same issue. It seems GM could add a dash light or tone if this happens while vehicle is in motion.
In past three weeks, the tailgate just drops down for no reason at all. Sometimes going down the highway, other times while I am parking vehicle the Tailgate Lowers itself automatically."??"Is their a recall out for this, if not should be as you can lose portions of a load in the bed, right out in highway in traffic.....What action if any should I take at this point.
