The contact owns a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph, the energy saver mode and service charging system failure warning messages displayed. In addition, the battery gauge was decreasing steadily to zero and dropped into the negatives. The contact coasted over to the side of the road and the vehicle stalled. The contact opened the hood and discovered that the alternator caught on fire. The fire extinguished on its own. The vehicle was towed to the contacts residence. The contact called the alternator company and it was informed that the alternator was a prototype experimental unit and advised the contact to call a dealer. The contact called cecil atkission motors- kerrville, Chevrolet, Cadillac and Buick dealer (550 benson dr, kerrville, tx 78028, (866) 240-2964) and was advised to bring the vehicle in but the contact did not due to the towing fee since the vehicle was not drivable. In addition, the dealer recommended calling GM directly since he detached the alternator himself. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 147,000.
