The failure is the stitching between the "leather" (no way this is leather) and the center part of the seat bottom. It tears out with normal use. I'm not a lard-ass and don't do anything special or unusual. Just get in and out like anyone else. Dealership replaced it the first time after about 15000 miles, under warranty.
Second time it's at 37000 miles and they say they can't do anything without GMC authorizing it. GMC 800 number clerk who barely speaks English says my claim has been reviewed and is not covered because it is cosmetic. She goes on to tell me that the representative who reviewed my claim determined this and I cannot speak to them. Basically they just blow me off.
So GMC EXPECTS its customers to replace the seat covers on a new vehicle every 15,000 miles or so. The service mgr at the dealership, Lee GMC in Lewiston Maine even went as far as to tell me he would tell any potential customer to expect that. I call BS on that and wonder what Mr. Lee might say to that. The GMC clerk also told me it is an unusual and isolated problem. I proceeded to tell her there are numerous forums that discuss the stitching issue and there is no way GMC is not well aware of the problem.
GMS used to be a decent company but I guess since they became to big to fail they can do whatever they want. My only saving grace is I can sell the truck and never by another GMC product as long as I live and let others know about my experience. Not its not a transmission problem or something major though they have some serious issues there too, but to tell a customer or a prospective customer they should expect to replace the seat covers every 15000 miles is just stupid. GMC and Lee GMC in Lewiston Maine deserve each other.
Maine is a pretty big GM state. The majority of truck owners own GM products. I am happy to announce I have successfully convinced two of my co-workers, who were strongly considering GM trucks, to buy a different brand. I know it makes no difference to GM but it does make me feel better.
I will continue to berate GMC until the day I die and hope I convince more and more people not to buy GMC. what a terrible company to buy a product from. Could stand behind their product and replace my cover with something that will last at least 50000 miles (most other brands last much longer) and cost them peanuts but instead they hide behind a bunch of foreign phone attendants reading from a script. Sorry just plain sorry.
