This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Steering wheel locked, as if it were in park, while I was driving. Seat belt light and alarm activated (I was wearing seat belt) and wrench icon appeared on instrument display. After a few seconds the lock disengaged and the icon disappeared and I was able to turn. I did some online research and apparently this problem has occurred to others. I do not want my or my family's safety jeopardized by this design flaw (the steering lock can engage while the vehicle is in gear and in motion!!!) so I am having my mechanic disable the lock.
The problem started while backing a trailer and turning. The stabiltrack light came on and the steering wheel jerked out of my hand. It happened a few more times and then the truck died. Later while driving the stabilitrack light would flash on and the dic would go black. The a.C. would also go out and come back on. It would also do this when turning on the signal light or stepping on the brake pedal. I was in a parking lot today driving slowly and the St message came then the dic went black again. When I tried to turn the wheel it started jerking back and pulled out of my hand. It seems that shutting the truck off and restarting solves the problem for a day or two. This is a very unsafe issue and I have seen and read many complaints. I have been a huge fan of GM and all I have ever owned were GM vehicles, but this issue is making me wonder if I should have bought a Ford instead. It seems that GM is not worried about recalling because of this safety issue, which there are many complaining of the same thing, and my warranty is about to run out.
The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. While driving various speeds, the steering seized and the stabilitrak warning indicator illuminated. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 35,000 the VIN was not available.
The steering rack developed a loud clunk that you could feel in the steering wheel and head outside when turned about 2/3 of the way to the left. The problem would happen almost every time the wheel was turned. The truck could be standing still or moving. I brought it to the dealer where they diagnosed it as having a bad steering rack. The truck has 43000 miles on it and it was definitely a safety issue. I read a little online about the problem and there is several people who have had the same issue. Someone stated that the new ones are built different than the 2014 and possibly 2015 model years. If the new ones are updated and it is a known problem it would be nice if the manufacturer would fix them before steering racks start failing.

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. While driving 40 mph, another vehicle crashed head on into the contact's vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. The contact sustained severe whiplash and a concussion, which required medical attention. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and sent an engineer to inspect the vehicle. Shortly after, while driving at an unknown speed, the stabilitrac warning light illuminated and the power steering malfunctioned. The steering wheel jerked violently. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that all the steering electronic sensors needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 19,000.

Truck vibrated new with 8 miles when we first drove it home. Pinpointed specific speeds and returned 9+ times to dealership over 7 months. Tires (twice), shocks and rear end were all replaced but did not stop vibration. 5 months from purchase we were followed by a neighbor and they saw my truck "dog tracking" (traveling sideways down the road). Dealer noted but would not follow at distance and speed required to witness the "dog tracking". dealer told me they were clueless and come get the truck. Local auto repair shop followed me and said there is definitely a problem. Front center of wheel to back center of wheel measures 1/2 inch less on driver side than passenger side but dealer says that is not a good measurement because their computer says everything is fine. This truck vibrates and "dog tracks" and dealership refuses to make proper offer and has given up on repair attempts. I am presently seeking help from a different dealer.
The part broke in half at low speed while I was driving in a construction area (my own driveway being installed) I hit something and the metal casing of the axle where it attaches to the front diff. Broke in half. I am 60 years old my wife was in the truck I was going so slow the speedometer was on 0. the dealer said the part was cracked by the impact. This is supposed to be a heavy duty 4X4 P/U, if I was going at 40 mph off road what would have broke and what would have been the result? I think the metal of the casing was flawed and I am afraid to keep the truck. The dealer said this isn't a warranty issue I had to put a claim into my ins. This is not only a concern for safety but for finances as well. I paid $44,000. Cash for this truck, it is the Sierra slt not only a 4X4 but it has 20" rims for added height. This was not hit hard enough to crack a steel casing. The truck is at a GMC/Buick dealer in mount dora fl. They said it might take awhile to find the parts to fix it. I do not think GMC makes cheap trucks or dangerous trucks but I think after this gets fixed I will be looking into trading it.
